Is Zcash a Good Investment After a 199% Year?

Zcash surged when Bitcoin stumbled, but sharp pullbacks, a looming network upgrade, and a dev fund debate now put ZEC at a crossroads that could either extend the rally or send it tumbling toward its 200-day average.

Zcash (CRYPTO: ZEC) has gained 199.4% over the past year, especially compared with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), which fell 29.1% over the same period. As a privacy coin, Zcash offers anonymity for its users, masking who sends a transaction and how much is exchanged. ZEC is priced at $1,233. So is Zcash a good investment after such a significant rise?

While the past year has been strong, the last month has been less favorable, with ZEC down 9.4% over the past 30 days and 3.5% in the last 24 hours. The price fluctuated between $1,126 on October 17 and $1,365 on October 6. As of late October, ZEC has fallen to 11th place by market value, just behind Hyperliquid (CRYPTO: HYPE). Previously, it had ranked within the top 10.

How Far Is Zcash From Its 2016 High?

On the long-term chart, Zcash’s 2016 high stands at $3,192, meaning it is currently trading 61.4% below that level. To reach its former glory by the end of 2027, Zcash would need to make a remarkable recovery.

To reclaim its 2016 high, ZEC would need a market value of about $54 billion. Currently, with about 17 million coins in circulation, ZEC’s market value is around $21 billion, meaning it would need to rise by 159% from its current price to hit that target.

However, this high is somewhat misleading due to supply changes. The 2016 all-time high occurred when significantly fewer coins were on the market. At current supply, if ZEC reached the same price, it would outpace Monero’s (CRYPTO: XMR) market valuation, which is currently about $11.3 billion.

Moreover, supply continues to increase as miners generate new ZEC with every block mined. Over time, Zcash will need a higher market cap to reach that previous peak price.

Zcash’s 199% Rally Came With Two Sharp Drops

Despite its substantial rise, ZEC has also experienced significant downturns. For example, it fell 61.4% from the December 31, 2025 close of $511 to a low of $197 on March 7. It also fell 31.9% from its September 26 high of $1,653 to $1,126 on October 17.

In comparison, Monero has been more stable as a privacy coin, up 10.9% in the last month while ZEC has dropped.

Good news for Zcash came when Binance, after experiencing a massive $6.3 billion hack, reopened deposits and withdrawals. ZEC was one of the first coins supported when Binance resumed operations.

NU7, ETF Flows and the Dev Fund Could Decide Zcash’s Next Move

The NU7 Upgrade Is Set for November 5

The upcoming NU7 upgrade is scheduled for activation around November 5, at block 3,543,405. This software update aims to improve transaction speeds by reducing the block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, resulting in faster payment confirmations. Starting in February 2031, 60% of transaction fees will also be redirected to miners.

Previous NU7 milestones have also negatively impacted the price. After the NU7 testnet went live, ZEC fell 17.9%, dropping from $1,352 on October 4 to $1,110 by October 8.

Grayscale Zcash ETF Flows Keep Flipping

The Grayscale Zcash ETF (NYSEARCA: ZCSH) lets investors gain exposure to ZEC through regular brokerage accounts. On October 29, money flowed into the fund but then flowed out the next day, suggesting investor interest has not yet stabilized.

Nonetheless, consistent ETF inflows could help lift the coin’s price. For instance, after a deposit on October 14, which broke a three-week dry spell, ZEC saw an 8% increase in value within 24 hours.

Zcash Developers Are Debating an Early End to the Dev Fund

The Development Fund currently allocates 20% of each block reward for the ongoing development of Zcash. This fund is set to expire in November 2028. Recent discussions have included proposals to end it early, which may have significant implications for the coin’s future value. However, any changes will likely coincide with NU8, Zcash’s upgrade following NU7.

Is Zcash a Good Investment?

ZEC’s performance will undergo its first major test with the NU7 activation around November 5. The coin will need to navigate this without repeating the drop seen during the testnet launch. Zcash must also push past its 50-day average price of $1,311 (6.3% above) and surpass the September high of $1,653 (34.1% above) while ETF inflows turn steady. If ZEC trades below its October low of $1,126 (8.7% below), it may drift toward its 200-day average of about $738 (40.1% below).

Given these factors, the likelihood of Zcash reclaiming that 2016 high of $3,192 by the end of 2027 appears low, as it would imply a market cap of about $54.3 billion. ZEC may suit high-risk investors looking for exposure to privacy coins who can tolerate significant price fluctuations. However, the volatility makes it less ideal for investors seeking stability over the coming year.
