SpaceX and Tesla Are Exploring a Merger That Would Hold 30,000 BTC. What Could It Mean for Bitcoin?
Elon Musk just confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla have each formed special committees to explore combining the two companies, and the deal would unite a significant Bitcoin stash under one roof. Whether that reshapes crypto markets or quietly fades depends…
SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX | SPCX Price Prediction) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) are in talks about a potential SpaceX-Tesla merger, which could leave the combined company holding around 30,000 Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC). Elon Musk, the CEO of both companies, shared on SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings call on October 20, 2026, that each company has established a special committee to evaluate the potential deal. Musk commented, “I do think there’s a lot of merit to combining the companies.”
Before the market opened on October 21, Tesla shares traded at about $379, up 1.5% from a close of $374, while SpaceX shares closed at about $148 on October 20. SpaceX’s stock rose in premarket trading after exceeding earnings expectations. Bitcoin trades at around $83,353 as of October 21, up 2.2% in the last 24 hours.
Musk Confirms Committees, but Neither Company Has Agreed to Terms

Musk has confirmed these committees and expressed enthusiasm for the merger, calling it “a good idea.” However, he also emphasized that no deal is guaranteed. Special committees made up of independent directors are necessary here because Musk has interests on both sides.
So far, neither company has revealed details such as the merger price, an exchange ratio (which determines how many shares holders of one company would receive in the other), the structure, timeline, or which company would remain. Tesla’s latest 8-K filing dates back to July 22, and no press releases have addressed the merger discussions. Additionally, neither company has broken down the 30,000 BTC figure into separate holdings.
Musk previously avoided discussing this topic on Tesla’s July 22 earnings call, stating, “We cannot talk about combining companies on an earnings call; that must be done with the appropriate process.”
30,000 BTC Represents a Small Fraction of Tesla and SpaceX’s Value

At current Bitcoin prices, 30,000 BTC is worth about $2.5 billion, or about 0.073% of the combined market value of both companies. For context, SpaceX reported third-quarter revenue of $14.6 billion and net income of $4.4 billion.
Bitcoin has been a financial challenge for Tesla, which recorded $222 million in digital-asset losses in the first quarter. The CFO noted “losses on Bitcoin of about $100 million” in the second quarter, despite a $1 billion mark-to-market gain tied to Tesla’s stake in SpaceX.
A SpaceX-Tesla Merger Would Not Create New Demand for Bitcoin

A merger would only consolidate existing coins into one corporate entity, so it wouldn’t create new demand for Bitcoin unless the newly formed company decides to buy more. So far, neither company has indicated any plans to do so. For comparison, Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) holds 848,517 BTC, so owning 30,000 BTC would place the merged company well behind the largest corporate holder.
The combined company might also sell some coins. Tesla’s capital expenditure hit $5.8 billion in the second quarter, up 141.8% year over year. The CFO indicated that Tesla is looking to secure funding options to “borrow up to $30 billion,” and a cash-hungry combined company could treat Bitcoin as a source of funds if needed.
Because Musk leads both companies, independent committees will manage the talks, and shareholder votes and regulatory approvals could slow the process. Polymarket shows a 19.5% chance of an official announcement by December 31.
Could the SpaceX-Tesla Merger Influence Bitcoin’s Price?
Based on current information, this merger seems unlikely to significantly impact Bitcoin’s price. Since the deal would merely reorganize around 30,000 BTC that already exist, any potential price changes would likely stem from market sentiment. The idea of two prominent public companies holding Bitcoin could strengthen the case for corporate treasuries to do the same.
Bitcoin holders should watch for announcements from the merged entity, whether through a merger agreement, an 8-K filing, a proxy filing, or a post from Musk on X about buying or selling BTC. A commitment to buy more coins could spur new demand, while signs of a sell-off could add pressure to a market already down 23.4% over the past year.
