Prediction: Could Bitcoin Reach a New All-Time High Before the 2028 Halving?

Bitcoin sits roughly 37% below its all-time high, and the next halving clock is ticking toward 2028. Whether bulls can close that gap hinges on a fragile mix of Fed moves, ETF flows, and one company sitting on billions in…

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) would need to climb about 58.8% to reach a new all-time high above its $126,080 record set on October 6, 2025. Many investors are focused on this figure because Bitcoin tends to peak dramatically every four years during its halving cycle.

Bitcoin is trading at $79,401, which is about 37% below that record. It has fluctuated between $79,332 and $80,825 in the last 24 hours. Over the past month, Bitcoin has dropped 5%, and it is down 30% over the last year, although it has gained around 24% since July 28, when it traded at $63,847.

Polymarket shows about a 5% chance that Bitcoin reaches a new high by December 31. So, could Bitcoin set a new record before the next halving in 2028?

Bitcoin Needs a $2.5 Trillion Market Value for a New Record

To set a new record, Bitcoin would need a market cap of around $2.53 trillion, based on a price of $126,080 multiplied by the circulating supply of 20,103,596 BTC. Bitcoin’s market cap stands at $1.60 trillion.

As Bitcoin’s supply continues to grow—capped at 21 million coins but still increasing due to mining—the total investment required to reach the previous peak will also rise. This means prospective buyers will need to invest more money to hit the same record price.

Moreover, Bitcoin dominates the crypto market, controlling 59.5% of the total market value. For Bitcoin to hit a new high, much of the new demand will likely come from outside the crypto space.

The 2028 Halving Sets Bitcoin’s Timeline for a New Record

Halvings are a built-in feature of Bitcoin that reduce the rewards miners receive for confirming transactions, effectively slowing new supply every 210,000 blocks, or about every four years. The next halving is expected in 2028.

The last halving occurred in April 2024, and Bitcoin set its all-time high about 18 months later. Since then, Bitcoin has not surpassed that peak, so a second record in the same cycle would break the pattern many investors rely on.

ETF Demand, Lower Rates and Strategy’s Buying Could Boost Bitcoin

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs)—stock market funds that hold Bitcoin directly—boast $104.7 billion in net assets, according to SoSoValue. Total net inflows, new investments added since launch, reached $57.2 billion by October 23.

However, investment flows can be unpredictable. For instance, on October 21, these funds saw $528.4 million in inflows, only to experience $635.5 million in outflows the very next day, finishing the week with a net inflow of about $304.7 million.

Interest rates also play a role. The Federal Reserve’s benchmark rate has held at 4.00%, and the 10-year Treasury yield dropped from 5.31% on October 5 to 4.96% on October 22. Since Bitcoin earns no interest, lower yields can make it more attractive to hold. M2—the total count of cash and deposits—rose to $23.3 trillion in August. However, the VIX, a measure of market volatility, rose 28.1% in a month to 19.5.

One notable player in the market is Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR | MSTR Price Prediction), a software company that has restructured its business to focus on Bitcoin. It holds 848,517 BTC, valued at about $67.4 billion. Its consistent buying cushions Bitcoin during price declines, but if Strategy or similar companies reduce purchases, ETFs may have to bear demand alone.

Can Bitcoin Hit a New All-Time High Before the 2028 Halving?

Bitcoin has a low chance of reaching a new all-time high in 2026, with only a modest likelihood before the 2028 halving. First, it would have to recover to $84,417, its September 26 price, 6.3% higher than its October 26 price. Next, it would need to surpass $100,000, about 26% more, requiring a Fed cut and steady ETF inflows while corporate buyers keep adding to their holdings.

In an optimistic scenario where rates fall in 2027, Bitcoin could surpass $100,000 and, over time, challenge its $126,080 record. In a base case, Bitcoin might range between $63,847 and $100,000 and miss a record. In a pessimistic outlook, rising ETF outflows and a VIX above 20 could send Bitcoin back to $63,847. So if Bitcoin fails to close a month above $100,000 by December 2027, a pre-halving record looks unlikely.
