The movie seemed promising to Walt Disney. “John Carter” a film about a Civil War vet who shows up on Mars cost about $250 million to produce. It is nearly impossible to see what the plot would draw an audience. And, it did not. Disney will take a $200 million writedown on the movie–a sign that it will not even do well in pay-per-view, overseas, or on Netflix.
Disney said the movie has brought in $184 million worldwide, but it shares ticket sales with movie theaters.
