These Guns are a Favorite for U.S. Army Forces

People call the Glock 19X “the gun built for the U.S. military.” But this weapon never actually made it to war. Developed in 2017, the Glock 19X became an option to replace the Beretta M9 — a gun that the U.S. military had used for decades. However, the military instead chose to adopt the SIG Sauer’s P320 variants — the M17 and M18. Glock fought this tooth-and-nail, believing that the Glock 19X was a far superior product to what SIG Sauer was offering. Even though the Glock 19X never made it to military use, it actually became extremely popular with civilian use. It sold over 100,000 units in under six months after its introduction in 2019. (These are the top-selling guns of all time, ranked.)

Even though the Glock 19X was never used by the U.S. Army, the Army does tend to prefer or prioritize certain weapons over others. Today, 24/7 Wall St. is exploring the weapons used by the U.S. Army — and why. To identify the most commonly used U.S. Army guns, 24/7 Wall St. referenced data from a range of sources, including military handbooks, government press releases, and firearms publications, including the Army’s Weapon Systems Handbook, to identify every standard-issue gun in the U.S. Army. These guns were ranked chronologically. We included supplemental information regarding the type of firearm, range, caliber, and manufacturer from the Military Factory.

Why This is Important

The global arms manufacturing sector is truly massive. The industry’s giants like Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), Raytheon (now called RTX Corp. (NYSE: RTX)), and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC), each account for billions in sales each year. This is in no small part because of the companies’ long history of lucrative weapons contracts for the U.S. military, which has a $800 billion+ annual budget. Some gun manufacturers on this list are major non-American companies like Sig Sauer and Heckler & Koch. Still, each is required by law to manufacture its U.S. military-bound weapons at factories in the United States.
