Mess With NATO and You’ll Have to Fight This World Power

After a high-ranking Russian general was assassinated in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the Kremlin spoke out in anger. A London newspaper referred to the general’s death as a legitimate act of defense. However, this language frustrated and upset Russia. In the wake of the publication, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev stated that if the general’s death was a legitimate act of defense, then any response by Russia would also be legitimized. Medvedev specifically called out NATO leaders and countries allied with Ukraine in the conflict, such as the United Kingdom, which has given huge amounts of military funding to Ukraine. NATO officials have responded by stating that the Kremlin’s argument is both threatening and irresponsible. Nobody wants to go to war against Russia, argued British and American forces, but would absolutely do so if necessary. (This is what might happen if Russia ever joined NATO.)

NATO countries operate on the premise of collective defense — if one NATO member is attacked, other members will step in with support. Given the large amount of military and global powers involved in NATO, the response to a threat from a country like North Korea or Russia could be immense. To determine the countries with the strongest military might in NATO, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. Global Firepower ranked 145 countries based on their PowerIndex, a composite of over 60 measures in categories such as military might, financials, logistical capability, and geography. The smaller the PowerIndex value, the more powerful a nation’s theoretical conventional fighting capability is. We included supplemental information regarding active military personnel, military aircraft, vehicles, and naval power as well.

Why Is This Important?

Taking a look at NATO’s military capabilities is more important than ever before — especially with an incoming Trump presidency and conflicts abounding on the world stage. NATO member countries work together to tackle crisis management, promote democracy, and create peaceful resolutions to dispute. Its principle of collective defense is the group’s hallmark and speaks to the cooperation encouraged between countries. The strength of these key players shows us what NATO can really do if forced to respond to a crisis or a threat against another member.
