This has been a good holiday season so far for retailers, with consumer confidence buoyed by a strong labor market, income gains, and the stock market climbing to record highs.
It is traditionally a make-or-break time for retailers, and they have been making it big this year. Even before the holiday season began, things were looking good for the nation’s merchants. Retail sales were surprisingly strong in November — increasing 0.8% from October and up 5.8% from a year earlier, the largest yearly November gain since 2011.
There could be even more good cheer in stores as the days immediately before Christmas are usually among the busiest.

This year, shoppers expect to do about 40% of their shopping online, up from 33% just two years ago. Online shoppers are also likely to spend several hundred dollars more than shoppers who buy gifts only in physical stores.
While there has been a relentless surge in online shopping, brick-and-mortar retail still retains its appeal more many shoppers. Traditional retailers have tried to fend off competition from Amazon by getting consumers into their stores and onto their own websites. One tactic all retailers use this time of year is the so-called doorbuster deals and other offers not available the rest of the year. And there are many enticing deals out there. 24/7 Wall St. has compiled a list of the 50 best doorbuster deals available online and in stores in the days before Christmas. The discounts we found range from 40% to a whopping 80% off retail prices.
One area that has been particularly hot is consumer electronics. These items carry higher price tags than many traditional gifts such as clothes and candy. Consumers are more inclined to upgrade their phones every couple of years than their socks and ties.
Headphones and portable speakers seem to be especially in demand this holiday season, as well as everything “smart” — smartphones, smart homes, and smart TVs. Best Buy is offering the Onyx Studio 4 speaker for $129.99, a discount of more than 70% off retail. Target has cut the price of Element’s 50-inch Smart TV by 45% to $299.99.
Video games are popular gifts too, and we found retailers across the country slashing prices from 40% to 66% off popular games like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Grand Theft Auto V, and Mafia III.
There are also appealing deals on ever-popular products for the home: Target is selling the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker for $69.99 and Walmart has the KitchenAid Mixer for $199, both discounted at least 45%.
Though the days will soon be getting longer, there is still lots of winter left, and Sears has some great discounts on warm-weather gear, such as 75% off Laura Scott Women’s Fleece Jacket and 67% off Outdoor Life Men’s Flannel Shirt Jacket.
