“Clothes make the man,” Mark Twain once wrote — and this was deep insight. Clothes are the expression of who we are, be it a tailored suit in business or a carefree attire on vacation.
The fashion industry is indeed much more than glitzy fashion shows; apart from helping to shape some societal norms, it is also a significant economic engine nationwide, turning over more than $100 billion in revenue a year.
When one thinks of fashion capitals, Paris, Milan, and London come to mind, but likely also Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles and Fifth Avenue in New York. Other U.S. cities don’t necessarily stir up the image of fashion destinations. Yet some are certainly more fashion-conscious than others.
24/7 Wall St. set out to discover the most fashionable U.S. cities. Instead of subjectively observing fashion trends among city residents, we created an index of five measures: the number of retailers that sell apparel such as Macy’s and Target, the number of luxury brand stores such as Gucci and Prada, fashion company headquarters, trade shows, and the number of fashion designers working in each city.
Though the list consists of cities from all around the nation, fashionable cities are also much more concentrated in a handful of states. Twelve cities are located in California, another eight in Florida, and an additional five in Texas. There are several cities that are the only representation of their respective state such as Columbus, Ohio; Omaha, Nebraska; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

50. Delray Beach, FL

Delray Beach, a small town of just over 65,000 people located on the southeast coast of Florida, is one of the most fashionable cities in the United States. The city hosted this past January the popular fashion trade show COAST, which featured brands such as Alo Yoga to the H Brand label, a luxury fur-based brand. Aside from the annual fashion event, Delray Beach has a relatively low number of fashion-related stores and is lacking a luxury brand store like Gucci or Chanel.

If you haven’t considered Fort Worth, Texas, a fashionable city, guess again. Residents of Fort Worth have quite the selection of clothing stores to shop in, with 319 places in total. While most U.S. cities don’t have even one high-end brand store, Fort Worth has a Louis Vuitton location. Residents also earn relatively high incomes, which could translate to higher spending on fashion. The typical city household earns well above the national median household income of $57,617 per year.
The city is home to a variety of museums and art fairs, such as the Kimbell Art Museum, which make for great opportunities to wear a classy outfit.

48. Sacramento, CA

The capital of California is one of the most fashionable cities in the country. Sacramento is becoming a hotspot for real estate with many out-of-towners flocking to the city. With over 263 clothing stores for city residents to browse around, two of which are high-end brand stores (Coach and Armani), Sacramento offers patrons plenty of opportunities to stay in-the-know about what’s hot and what’s not.

47. Palm Desert, CA

Palm Desert, about 120 miles east of Los Angeles, is one of the most fashionable cities in the United States. For starters, there are 143 clothing stores in the area, a healthy number of options for a city of just over 50,000 people. Adjusted to the population, the concentration of fashion outlets in Palm Desert is second only to Santa Monica, California.
It’s not unreasonable to assume that such extensive access to clothing stores helps Palm Desert residents keep up with the latest fashion trends. Additionally, Palm Desert is home to four luxury fashion stores — Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Ralph Lauren — more than most cities.

46. White Plains, NY

About 28 miles northeast of Manhattan — the shopping mecca of the nation — lies White Plains in Westchester County, one of the 100 most affluent cities in the nation. White Plains residents are also among some of the most fashionable in the country. While the number of fashion outlets in the city, 88, is low even for a city of its size, the proximity to NYC likely helps fill any fashion needs that may be lacking locally. High-end luxury fashion outlets are relatively rare — but not in White Plains. The city has five luxury fashion brand stores, including Burberry, Gucci, Coach, and two Louis Vuitton stores, which give this city a considerable boost in this ranking.

If Kansas City, Missouri, isn’t on your radar for fashion, you may want to reconsider. City residents have 250 clothing stores to choose from, three of which are upscale brand stores — Burberry, Coach, and Armani.
Kansas City has a rich history when it comes to fashion. At the end of the 1940s, the city’s Garment District employed over 4,000 people and claimed that one in seven women nationwide were at one time buying clothing made in the city. Today, Kansas City hosts its own fashion week, and this year it will begin on Sept. 26.

Glendale is one of 12 California cities on this list, which is a strong testament to the state’s fashion sense as a whole. Glendale, in particular, is home to nearly 200 fashion retailers, including four luxury brand outlets: Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and two Coach stores.

To say Santa Monica residents have an eclectic sense of style is an understatement. The city is one of five on this list within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, where the share of workers employed as fashion designers is more than seven times the national proportion.
Santa Monica is home to approximately 260 clothing stores. This number of stores is especially high when considering that only about 92,200 inhabit this coastal city. This means that for every 100,000 people, there are about 280 fashion-related stores, the highest concentration of any city in the nation.

One of the smaller cities on this list, Kendall, Florida, with just 74,559 residents, is ranked as one of the most fashionable cities in the country. Kendall is one of eight Florida cities among the most fashionable in the country.

Like many of the nation’s most fashionable cities, Palo Alto is one of the most affluent cities in the nation. The median annual household income of over $84,000 in Troy is considerably higher than the national median of $57,617 per year. Atlanta, Georgia, is the 10th most fashionable city in the nation. Atlanta has over 500 clothing stores — about 112 stores for every 100,000 people in the city. Sixteen of these retailers are high-end brand stores, the 10th most of any city in the nation.
High-fashion brand stores in Atlanta include Fendi, Prada, and Chanel. The city is also home to two locations of each Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Armani. The headquarters of children’s apparel chain-store, Carter’s, is also located in Atlanta. For the last 10 years, the city has hosted Atlanta International Fashion Week.

Chicago is the fifth most fashionable city in the nation. With over 1,200 stores to choose from, 17 of which are high-end brands, Chicago is the place to be in the Midwest for finding the most recent fashion trends and styles. The city’s premier commercial district, the Magnificent Mile, boasts 460 retailers, likely making it the most heavily concentrated shopping area in Chicago. Chicago also hosts an annual Fashion Week.

4. Paradise, NV

Have you ever heard of Paradise, Nevada? If you’re not a local, it’s possible you haven’t. The Las Vegas suburb has a population of 229,600, and actually contains a good portion of attractions associated with its larger neighbor. The famous Las Vegas strip, for example, is in Paradise.
Paradise was created for casino owners who wanted to dodge paying Las Vegas city taxes. Today, Paradise is one of the most heavily concentrated shopping areas, with about 258 stores for every 100,000 people. It’s also home to a whopping 46 designer-brand stores, the second most in the nation after New York City.

3. Houston, TX

Houston, Texas, is the third most fashionable city in the United States. This Texan city is a shopping epicenter with 1,484 clothing stores to peruse through, 26 luxury brand stores to indulge in (or at least window shop), and headquarters of three well-known brands: The Men’s Wearhouse, Stage Stores, and Francesca’s. Home to fashion design reality series Project Runway second season winner Chloe Dao, and plenty of shopping areas, Houston is considered the fashion capital of the South.

2. Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles, the city that birthed the nation’s cinema powerhouse Hollywood and the home of many stars, is the second most fashionable city in the nation. To say that shopping opportunities in L.A. are immense is an understatement. Nearly 3,800 clothing stores of all kinds are sprawled about the city — 43 of which are high-end brands. Los Angeles is also home to the headquarters of two big-name fashion brands: American Apparel and Guess? In addition, three trade shows pass through the city: L.A. Textile Show, Designers and Agents, and COEUR.

The most fashionable, chic, and stylish city in the United States is none other than New York City. The Big Apple ranks first in many of the categories considered in our index. For example, NYC is home to nearly 4,360 fashion stores, 71 luxury brand stores, 6,500 fashion designers, 14 trade shows, and the headquarters of 23 big-name brands — each of the most in the nation. With different styles blossoming and flourishing among all five of New York City’s boroughs, it’s no question that the city offers some of the most diverse and unique fashion trends of any city. Of course, New York Fashion Week is the most prestigious fashion even nationwide, and this year, nine brands will make their debut at the event.
Methodology
To identify the most fashionable cities in America, 24/7 Wall St. created an index of five measures: the prevalence in each city of the number of fashion-related establishments, the number of luxury brand outlets, fashion company headquarters, trade shows, as well as total employment of fashion designers.
The number of fashion-related establishments was obtained from Yelp and the category includes anything from sportswear and sleepwear stores to vintage clothing and shoe stores.
The number of fashion companies headquartered in each city came from Chain Store Guide’s “Top 100 Apparel Specialty Stores Ranked by Industry Sales.”
To counted stand alone fashion outlets named among the top luxury brands in the world in 2017 by business magazine Ceoworld.
The number of trade shows held in each city in 2018 came from Startup Fashion, an online community that helps independent fashion brands create successful businesses.
The number of fashion designers employed in each MSA’s principal city came from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics program and is as of May 2017, the most recent data available.
