While we all hope to never need to file a homeowners insurance claim, it’s important to trust that your home insurance provider will be there to properly protect your largest asset in the event you need them. To help you determine which homeowners insurance companies you should consider, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 homeowners insurance companies for 2019.

Unlike many other best insurance companies lists you may see, our list is based exclusively on the ratings and reviews provided by consumers. We’ve collected thousands of homeowners insurance reviews to generate the list of top companies.

Below are our annual rankings of which homeowners insurance companies consumers rated the best.

Our second-annual list of top homeowners insurance companies is based on the same rating as last year. Each score accounts for a combination of factors, including overall customer rating, the customer service rating, likelihood to renew with the insurer and likelihood to recommend the company to a friend.

1. USAA
> Company rating: 4.76
> Number of reviews: 501 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.71

For the second straight year, USAA locked down the No. 1 spot for top-rated homeowners insurance company. The national insurer, which is only eligible to active and former military members and their families, is renowned for its service as evidenced by its 4.71 claims service rating. Not only was USAA the top-ranked home insurer, it was also rated the best car and best renters insurance company by consumers.

2. Amica Mutual Insurance Company

> Number of reviews: 113 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.48

Based in Rhode Island, Amica offers homeowners insurance across the continental United States. In addition to ranking high for homeowners insurance, the mutual insurance company rated highly for car insurance as well, ranking third for 2019. For those looking to bundle auto and homeowners insurance with the same company, Amica offers a multi-policy discount for as much as 15 percent.

3. Erie Insurance Group
> Company rating: 4.42
> Number of reviews: 221 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.37

Erie Insurance is the smallest insurer to make the list — selling homeowners insurance in 12 states — but consumers have high praise for the company. Its claims service rating of 4.37 ranks as the third best of any homeowners insurer with 100 reviews. Erie also scored well for car insurance, where it placed fifth for 2019.

4. State Farm

> Number of reviews: 1,794 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.22

State Farm is the most commonly used homeowners insurance company in the U.S., writing more than twice as much premium as any other insurer. Despite its size, State Farm manages to have a local feel with more than 19,000 agents spread across the country.

5. Progressive
> Company rating: 4.32
> Number of reviews: 409 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.31

Progressive is unique in that it doesn’t directly write homeowners insurance, instead selling through other licensed insurers. But consumers still rate the well-known car insurer highly for its services for homeowners insurance. Those who insure their cars with Progressive can earn savings by bundling their home insurance with the company.

6. Safeco Insurance

> Claims service rating: 4.28

Safeco, which offers homeowners insurance in most states, climbed two spots on the best homeowners insurance companies list from 2018. The Seattle-based insurance company offers up to a 15 percent discount for bundling home and auto insurance policies with them.

7. MetLife
> Company rating: 4.24
> Number of reviews: 144 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.27

After not cracking the top 10 for homeowners insurance a year ago, MetLife checks in at No. 7 on the list of best homeowners insurance companies for 2019. The national insurance provider offers up to a 10 percent discount if you package your car and home insurance policies together.

8. Geico
> Company rating: 4.24
> Number of reviews: 503 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.16

Similar to Progressive, Geico may be known for car insurance, but consumers have expressed satisfaction with buying homeowners insurance through the insurer. Geico car insurance policyholders earn a discount on their auto insurance as well as their homeowners insurance if they buy both policies from the insurance company.

9. AAA

AAA is arguably best known for its roadside service and membership program, but the insurer also cracked the top 10 for both best homeowners and best car insurance company. AAA offers homeowners insurance in about half the states around the country and has regional clubs spread throughout the United States.

10. Farmers Insurance Group
> Company rating: 4.21
> Number of reviews: 387 reviews
> Claims service rating: 4.08

Farmers Insurance, headquartered in Los Angeles, is a national insurance provider that offers a wide variety of products. Farmers works with a network of captive agents in addition to some independent agents, servicing more than 10 million households around the country.

Methodology

Clearsurance’s company ratings are based entirely upon consumer feedback and ratings. Clearsurance uses a proprietary algorithm that factors in all aspects of its user reviews, including the policyholder’s overall experience with the company, the company’s service, the customer’s likelihood to renew with the company and the customer’s likelihood to recommend the company to a friend.

In order to determine the rankings of the best homeowners insurance companies for 2019, Clearsurance considered all companies with at least 100 homeowners insurance reviews during the 2018 calendar year. All companies that qualified were then ranked in order of their Clearsurance rating, a combination of the above ratings provided in each consumer review written on Clearsurance. The ratings for each company is based only on the reviews for homeowners insurance for each company in 2018.
