The Most Massive Cars People Actually Drive

Courtesy of Ford Motor Company

As anyone who has spent any time in the United States knows, Americans love to drive bigger, heavier vehicles, especially mid-size SUVs and large pickup trucks.

Recent annual sales data from Kelley Blue Book, a vehicle valuation and automotive research provider, shows that this shift away from sedans and toward SUVs continues unabated. Many of the most popular cars sold last year were SUVs. Here is a list of the cars so popular dealerships can’s keep them in stock.

Of course, there are large cars and then there are very large cars. Kelly Blue Book provided 24/7 Wall St. with a list of 25 vans, trucks, and SUVs that weight at least 5,500 pounds, which is approximately double the weight of a Honda Civic. One of the vehicles on this list weighs over 4 tons. These are all vehicles for the 2019 model year. To avoid repetition, only the heaviest trim for each model is listed.

As a general rule, full-size SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator and large pickup trucks like the Nissan Titan have dismal fuel economy. But what drivers give up in efficiency and a smaller carbon footprint they get back in the conveniences of ample space and utility.

Although the larger, heavier cars cost more to refuel, they offer one notable financial benefit: they can cost less to insure because of lower personal injury claims. These are the 25 least expensive cars to insure.
