A $6.1 billion drive-thru coffee chain is about to become a food and delivery business: Barone used the third quarter call to flag hot food tests and a delivery pilot for 2027. That widens the addressable ticket well beyond beverages, and it raises execution risk on margins investors have been paying up for.

Christine Barone, CEO and President of Dutch Bros, used the third-quarter 2026 earnings call to outline a meaningful shift in what the $6.1 billion drive-thru chain actually sells. Beyond beverages, the company is testing hot food platforms and piloting delivery, two moves that would put Dutch Bros in direct competition with a much broader set of quick-service operators.

The ambition here is a larger addressable ticket per visit. A customer who can order a cold brew alongside a hot breakfast item, or place an order through a delivery app, represents more revenue per transaction than the beverage-only model Dutch Bros has built its valuation on. That is the upside case Barone is signaling for 2027.

The risk sits on the other side of that equation. Food operations carry different cost structures than a beverage-focused menu, and delivery introduces third-party logistics, packaging, and fulfillment complexity. Investors who have been willing to pay up for Dutch Bros margins built on a lean drive-thru model will want to watch how the unit economics evolve as these tests scale.

Barone also cited accelerating beverage innovation and enhanced digital capabilities as parallel priorities, framing all of it as building on investments in people, tools, and processes made over the past several years. The question heading into 2027 is whether Dutch Bros can expand its concept without diluting the operational simplicity that has defined its growth story.
