A negative July payrolls number did nothing to slow the record run, with the S&P 500 opening 23 points above yesterday's close. Traders are reading weak jobs data as a faster path to rate cuts, and the Dow is following along.

July's payrolls report came in negative, yet equity markets responded by moving higher at the open. The logic driving traders is that softer labor market data gives the Federal Reserve more room to cut interest rates sooner, and that prospect is outweighing any concern about the underlying weakness in hiring.

The S&P 500 opened at 7,733.09, a gain of 23 points over yesterday's close of 7,709.98, extending what the card describes as a record run. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is joining the advance, adding 0.18% at the open, reinforcing that the rate-cut read is broad-based rather than confined to a single corner of the market.

The immediate question for investors is whether the opening strength holds through the session. Moves rooted in interest-rate expectations can reverse quickly if Fed officials push back on the market's timeline, so how bond yields and Fed commentary evolve through the day will be worth watching alongside the equity tape.
