Allstate posted adjusted earnings per share of $9.76 for the third quarter of 2026, well ahead of the Wall Street consensus of $6.96 and extending the insurer's streak of topping EPS estimates to five consecutive quarters. The 40% beat stands out even by Allstate's recent standards, which have included a string of double-digit percentage surprises stretching back to Q4 2024.
The headline figure masked a significant headwind underneath. Catastrophe losses jumped to $1.65 billion in the quarter, up sharply from $558 million in the same period a year earlier, adding 7.1 points to the combined ratio. That the company still delivered such a strong EPS result speaks to the strength of its underwriting margins in auto and homeowners lines, as well as a $228 million rise in net investment income driven by higher portfolio balances and private equity gains.
Homeowners insurance was the standout segment, with earned premiums up 11.5% on rate increases and policy growth. Auto insurance policies in force grew 3.4% year over year, though the auto underlying combined ratio rose to 89.8 from 86.0 on higher underlying losses. Total policies in force reached 217.6 million, and new auto business rose 6.3% while new homeowners business climbed 10.2%, pointing to continued market share gains.

Revenue came in at $17.35 billion, up 1.7% year over year but missing the $17.46 billion estimate by 0.64%, a shortfall that investors are unlikely to view as a material concern given the magnitude of the EPS outperformance. GAAP diluted EPS of $8.03 was lower than the adjusted figure of $9.76, with the gap reflecting $545 million in net losses on investments and derivatives tied to rising interest rates.
On the capital return front, Allstate returned approximately $1.5 billion to shareholders through repurchases and dividends in the quarter, leaving $1.3 billion remaining under its $4.0 billion buyback authorization initiated in February 2026. CEO Tom Wilson highlighted the expansion of ALLIE, the company's large language model AI system, noting that additional capabilities are planned for early 2027. Arity's acquisition of the remaining ownership of Replica is expected to close before the end of 2026. Management speaks on an earnings call at 9:00 a.m. ET Wednesday.
