Joby Aviation CEO promises to fly on his own aircraft before Q4 earnings

As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 4, 2026.

We recently powered on the first of our aircraft designated for passenger testing. After years of imagining what it will feel like to fly with Joby, I'm very much looking forward to taking my first flight on that aircraft and telling you about it on our next financial results call.

Bevirt just put a deadline on himself: a human on board before the Q4 earnings call, which turns Joby's next quarter into a hard checkpoint rather than another progress update. For a $5.1 billion company with no revenue from passengers, piloted flight in its own aircraft is the milestone the FAA certification path hinges on.

Joeben Bevirt, Joby Aviation's CEO and Chief Architect, made a public commitment during the Q3 2026 earnings call that few executives would volunteer: he will personally fly on the company's first aircraft designated for passenger testing and report back on that experience at the next financial results call. That self-imposed deadline converts an open-ended development timeline into a concrete, CEO-accountable checkpoint with a date attached.

The aircraft in question was recently powered on, marking the transition from engineering hardware to something ready to carry a human body. For a company valued at $5.1 billion that has yet to generate a dollar of passenger revenue, this step from ground systems to an occupied cockpit carries real weight. Piloted flight in its own aircraft is a foundational requirement on the path to FAA certification.

Bevirt's framing is deliberate. By tying the milestone to the Q4 earnings call rather than a vague future date, he is giving investors a specific moment to measure progress against. If the flight happens, it validates years of development and shifts the conversation toward certification timelines. If it does not, the absence will be the loudest signal of the call.

What to watch between now and that earnings call is whether the passenger-testing aircraft completes its first crewed flight and whether Bevirt is on board as promised. Any update on FAA interaction around that milestone will also carry weight, since certification progress is the variable that ultimately determines when, and whether, revenue follows.
