General Motors moved on two fronts at once, lifting its quarterly dividend 20% while authorizing a $20 billion share repurchase program. Management is signaling that the stock is undervalued and the balance sheet can support returning significant cash to shareholders.

The buyback is the more striking of the two, sized to retire roughly a quarter of all outstanding shares. That would meaningfully shrink the float and, all else equal, lift per-share earnings.

The dividend calendar is already set: shareholders of record as of December 4, 2026 will receive the $0.18 quarterly payment on December 17, 2026. The 20% increase is a decisive step up from the prior rate.

Buybacks of this scale take time to execute, so the immediate signal here is intent. Committing this much capital to repurchases at this valuation tells the market where leadership thinks the stock stands.
