Hong Kong opened essentially unchanged at 3,251.60 while mainland buyers pushed the SSE Composite up 0.75%, a split that says the bid is onshore right now. Anyone playing China exposure through Hong Kong is on the wrong side of that gap this morning.

The Hang Seng opened at 3,251.60, barely a whisker below its previous close. That stillness at the open reflects a market that has been drifting lower over the past two weeks and has found no fresh catalyst to reverse the slide.

The more telling number is the 0.75% gain on the SSE Composite. Mainland buyers are active this morning while Hong Kong buyers sit out, and with both markets trading China-linked companies, the appetite is clearly onshore.

For investors using Hong Kong-listed equities as their primary vehicle for China exposure, this divergence is a direct cost. The same underlying economic story is being priced more generously in Shanghai right now, and that gap does not automatically close by the end of the session.

The recent chart trend adds weight to the concern. The Hang Seng has pulled back from the 3,306 area it touched earlier and has spent several sessions consolidating since. Until buyers in Hong Kong reassert themselves, the path of least resistance remains sideways at best.
