The FTSE 100 closed at 14,404, a gain of just over 0.5% on the day. That puts the index in positive territory, but it lagged its continental peers by a meaningful margin.

Investors are pricing in a Bank of England rate cut that the central bank has not yet delivered, which keeps a ceiling on how far sterling-denominated assets can run relative to European rivals where that policy uncertainty is less acute.
