The S&P 500 ended the session at 7,551.47, giving back 34 points from its previous close. For most of the day the index held comfortably in positive territory before sellers stepped in decisively in the final stretch of the session.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average told a notably different story, dropping 622 points, or about 1.2%. That decline ran nearly three times deeper than the broader market's slide, pointing to concentrated pressure in the old-economy blue chips that make up the 30-stock index rather than a broad-based rout across the market.

The S&P 500 spent the bulk of the day in positive territory while the Dow was in the red almost from the open. The late-afternoon selloff pulled both indexes sharply lower, but the Dow never recovered the way the broader market did during the midday hours.
For investors, the split outcome matters because it points to selective selling across the market. When the Dow underperforms the S&P 500 by that margin in a single session, it often reflects rotation or specific pressure on large industrials and financials.
