The S&P 500 opened at 7,824.81 on Tuesday, the first time the index has started a session above 7,800.

A gap-up open shifts the day's calculus for active investors, because buyers taking control in the opening minutes raise the cost of entering a position through the rest of the session.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average also opened higher but trailed the S&P 500's advance, pointing to large-cap and technology-weighted names doing more of the lifting at the bell. The Nasdaq Composite's opening change was not immediately available.

The index spent most of the past two weeks consolidating below the 7,800 threshold, so breaking above a round-number level at the open reinforces the move and draws in buyers who had been waiting for confirmation.
