The first motorcycle was a self-propelled bicycle created by Great Britain’s Edward Butler, way back in 1884. Jumping ahead several decades to the 1940s, WWII soldiers used motorbikes overseas. After the war ended, sales soared, as servicemen returned to the states and bought their very own motorcycles. By 1970, four million motorcycles were registered in America. By this time, motor bikes had become synonymous with a “cool guy” image. The stereotype of a motorcycle rider was a tough dude with a leather-clad physique and plenty of muscle to boot.

According to the United States Census Bureau, just over 8% of Americans owned a motorcycle in 2018, up over one percent from 2014. Motorcycle die-hard fans prefer motorcycles due to ease of parking, less money spent on gas, and enhanced sense of adventure. Additionally, they easily swerve between large cars on the road.

Some drivers look to motorcycles as a less expensive means of transportation. Though plenty of motorcycles cost as much, or even more, than a four-door vehicle, several models are affordable. At 24/7 Wall St., we have pored through online conversations, manufacturers listings, dealer listings, and various lists of the cheapest motorcycles you can buy right now. Below is a list of the 10 cheapest motorcycles we could find, from most to least expensive. Please note that some models have been discontinued in certain markets, and prices fluctuate.

Why This Matters

Economizing on transportation is an efficient way to reduce costs, and riding a motorcycle instead of taking a car on short trips can be an enjoyable way to cut down on fuel consumption and some greenhouse emissions. When it comes to practical ways of getting from point A to point B, an inexpensive motorcycle may be the simplest method, and with national gas prices closer to $4 than $3, driving a motorcycle can save quite a bit of cash.

Here are the 10 cheapest motorcycles you can buy right now:
