Refining margins did the heavy lifting: R&M margin more than doubled to $36.33 per barrel from $17.58 a year ago, lifting net income 219% to $5.14 billion. That funded over $2.8 billion of capital returned in the quarter, with $6.1 billion still authorized for buybacks.
