Digital media research firm eMarketer forecasts that online advertising will generate $39.5 billion in revenue in 2012. The firm also forecasts that total spending on print advertising will total $33.8 billion. This marks the first year that Internet ad spending will top print ad spending.

Television advertising is not threatened by online advertising yet, but the gap is narrowing and by 2016, eMarketer sees the difference narrowing from about $27 billion this year to $10 billion. The firm projects US TV advertising of $72 billion in 2016, compared to $62 billion in online advertising.

Spending in 2012 will get an election year boost from political ad spending. TV ad spending will also get a boost from this year’s London Olympic games.
