Research firm eMarketer has estimated that the total mobile advertising spend in 2011 reached $1.45 billion, up from about $770 million in 2010. The firm forecasts that total spending will hit $2.61 billion in 2012, up by 80%.The leading ad networks, including AdMob from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and iAd from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), are significant drivers of the projected growth.

eMarketer says that growth is “driven by the rapid ascension of Google’s mobile search advertising business, advertisers’ growing attraction to display inventory on tablet and smartphone devices, and the growing roster of mobile ad networks such as Google’s AdMob, Apple’s iAd and Millennial Media.”

Mobile search advertising is estimated to reach $1.28 billion this year and display advertising is expected to post sales of $862 million.
