It is a wonder that Sony (NYSE: SNE) wants to take sole ownership of the Sony Ericsson handset company. The firm announced another loss, this time for the fourth quarter. It has been completely unable to challenge smartphone leaders Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), HTC, Samsung, and even the battered Nokia (NASDAQ: NOK). Many firms like Samsung and HTC have adopted the successful Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android mobile OS.
Even a weak smartphone manufacturer, Motorola (NYSE: MMI) has been given a lift which Sony Ericsson cannot match. It has been bought by Google.
Mobile handset maker Sony Ericsson Thursday surprised the market with a €207 million ($266.3 million) loss due to increased competition and headwinds in Europe in the three months to Dec. 31.
