comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR) has now released its Q4 2011 U.S. retail e-commerce sales estimates and the number is within one-percent of the $50 billion mark now.  It was another record in eCommerce spending on retail with a 14% jump to $49.7 billion.  comScore probably tried and tried to find another $300 million to make for a $50 billion headline.

As noted, “This growth rate represented the ninth consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth and fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth rates. For the entire 2011 year, U.S. retail e-commerce spending reached a record $161.5 billion, marking a 13-percent increase from 2010.”

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) had fourth quarter sales of $17.4 billion and annual sales in 2011 were $48 billion.  If you count every penny of Amazon’s sales equally, you can see just how much it dominates eCommerce.

This report is the retail eCommerce showing non-Travel and the figure excludes auctions from eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) and others.  The report also excludes autos and large corporate purchases to keep the data consistent through time.
