When an underground pipe broke at a shale gas well in Pennsylvania last December, well-owner Chevron Corp. reported an underground spill of about 2 barrels of condensates. As of today, the broken pipe is thought to have spilled 80 barrels of condensate.
The leak occurred between November 8th, when Chevron began “fracking” the well and December 20th, when the spill was discovered, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At least 1,000 cubic yards of soil around the well pad have been removed so far and Chevron has said that contamination has spread beyond the well pad itself.
A Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection official said, “Condensate has been detected off the well pad within the surface waters below the site.” There is no indication yet that any groundwater or wells have been contaminated.
