Tesla and SpaceX both have skin in the same Austin semiconductor fab, but their reasons for needing it could not be more different, and that gap quietly determines which company wins the next leg of the AI race.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA | TSLA Price Prediction) and SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) closed Q2 2026 with results that put their shared Austin semiconductor fab, Terafab, at the center of every forward question. Tesla posted record deliveries but bruised margins. SpaceX beat on both lines and unleashed a massive AI capex wave. Same fab, two very different reasons to care.

Record Cars Meet Runaway AI Revenue

Tesla shipped 480,126 vehicles and pulled in $28.24 billion in revenue, yet operating margin collapsed to 1.4% as OpEx jumped 47% on AI infrastructure and stock-based comp. Free cash flow flipped to negative $1.09 billion. Management still says “hardware-related profits [will] be accompanied by an acceleration of AI, software, and fleet-based profits.” That is the pitch behind Terafab: cheaper AI5 inference chips for FSD, Optimus, and the Cybercab line now running at Giga Texas.

SpaceX told a louder story. Revenue reached $7.81 billion, and the AI segment alone grew 247% to $2.56 billion. Capex hit $18.37 billion, with $15.83 billion aimed at AI compute. Starlink subscribers doubled to 12.0 million, though ARPU slipped from $85 to $66.

Tesla needs Terafab to protect gross margin on millions of cars and eventually one million Optimus units per year of capacity. SpaceX needs raw wafer volume to feed satellites launching every week and the Colossus II build-out. Per the article brief, SpaceX is positioned to benefit more directly in allocated compute capacity and hardware scaling, while Tesla benefits more immediately on cost margin and supply-chain sovereignty for mass production. That framing tracks with the filings.

The Next Test Is Chip Allocation

Watch how wafer starts get divided once Terafab lights up. Tesla just taped out AI5 in April 2026 and still needs Samsung for advanced nodes. SpaceX has $14.1 billion in Cloud Services Agreements already signed and a pending $60 billion Cursor acquisition that will demand even more compute. Polymarket prices a Tesla-SpaceX merger at just 17.5% by year-end, so investors should treat the fab economics as separate ledgers.

Why I Lean SpaceX for Upside, Tesla for Relief

SpaceX gets more torque from Terafab in the near term. The AI segment growing 247% against a $93.5 billion cash pile is the profile that turns fab access into revenue fastest. SPCX has already jumped 22.83% in a week. Tesla is the value-repair story. If Terafab quietly rebuilds automotive margin toward historical norms while FSD attach stays above 55%, TSLA at $328.58 after a 26.94% year-to-date drawdown looks like a patient investor’s setup. Neither is cheap, and one full quarter of Terafab output data will be the key signal to watch before the thesis firms up.
