Moderna Surges 9% as Phase 3 Melanoma Data Wins Presidential Symposium Slot; Merck and BioNTech Edge Higher
A coveted Presidential Symposium slot at Europe's top oncology congress just sent Moderna shares flying 9%, but the actual Phase 3 melanoma data remains unseen. Here is why the scheduling alone is moving markets and what it signals about what…

Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA | MRNA Price Prediction) shares are surging Monday morning after the company announced that its Phase 3 adjuvant melanoma study for intismeran autogene, an investigational messenger RNA individualized neoantigen therapy, was selected for a Presidential Symposium slot at the European Society for Medical Oncology congress in Madrid. The stock is at $167.90, up 9% in Monday morning trading, extending a sharp multi-week run that has repriced the equity around this one clinical program.
Merck (NYSE:MRK) is the pharma partner on intismeran autogene and supplies pembrolizumab, the checkpoint inhibitor combined with the vaccine in the study. Merck stock is at $148.95, up 1%. BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) runs its own late-stage individualized messenger RNA cancer immunotherapy programs and is trading higher on platform read-through. BioNTech shares are at $97.71, up 2%.
The iShares Biotechnology ETF (NASDAQ:IBB) is at $207.28, up 1%. Meanwhile, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is at $770.54, up 1.16%. Moderna’s advance runs several times either fund’s move, placing today’s reaction firmly in one name rather than in biotech as a group.
Presidential Symposium Slot Reframes the Catalyst
Moderna announced that three abstracts on intismeran autogene were accepted at the European Society for Medical Oncology congress in late October. The Phase 3 INTerpath-001 study, which tests intismeran autogene plus pembrolizumab against pembrolizumab alone as adjuvant treatment for patients whose melanoma had been surgically removed, was selected for the Presidential Symposium, according to Moderna. That presentation is scheduled for October 24, and Moderna will host a live investor webcast the same day. Two poster presentations covering studies in resectable pancreatic cancer and in completely resected early-stage non-small cell lung cancer round out Moderna’s presence at the meeting.
No new efficacy result was released Monday. The melanoma result itself was first reported in August, and what today’s Moderna announcement adds is the venue and a fixed date. A Presidential Symposium is the congress’s highest-profile placement, typically reserved for datasets its organizers expect to shape clinical practice. The session therefore reprices the expected significance of the presentation rather than any result readers can yet examine. In practical terms, the market is treating the scheduling itself as a signal about what the Moderna dataset probably shows, since a slot that competes for airtime with plenary talks isn’t handed out for a marginal readout.
Merck and BioNTech Move Modestly on Read-Through
Merck co-owns intismeran autogene and is barely moving Monday, mirroring the split that appeared when the melanoma result was first reported in August. The same readout stands to reshape what Moderna is as a business, while barely registering against Merck’s much larger oncology franchise. That’s why the pembrolizumab partner is up a fraction while Moderna is up 9%.
BioNTech runs its own individualized messenger RNA cancer immunotherapy pipeline, and platform read-through can lift peers when a rival program posts a favorable signal. The move in BioNTech is real but modest, which suggests the platform read-across isn’t doing much heavy work Monday. This reads as a Moderna-specific rerating rather than a group re-rating of messenger RNA oncology as a category. Traders often assume a favorable individualized cancer vaccine dataset would validate the whole modality, but the price action Monday doesn’t carry that broader read.
What to Watch Next
The next real data for Moderna arrives on October 24, when the Phase 3 dataset is presented and Moderna’s investor webcast walks through the details in the same session. Between now and then, Moderna price action is running on expectation rather than fresh data, and any additional abstract text or sell-side previews can move the stock in either direction. Investors can watch for whether the Moderna stock setup holds into the event and how analyst commentary evolves as any preview material appears. Options activity around the late October window is likely to reflect that concentrated event risk.
The bull case for Moderna is straightforward: a Presidential Symposium slot isn’t a neutral scheduling detail, since the congress reserves that placement for data its organizers expect to change clinical practice. However, the complication is that the market is paying today for an assessment of a dataset no one outside the trial has seen, and Moderna has already been repriced once on this program. That argues for a measured approach to their position sizing rather than a full commitment ahead of the readout. Traders may want to check for whether Moderna stock holds $167 into the close as the first real test of demand at these levels.
