The Tech Selloff Is Only Strengthening My Belief In Alphabet
While most investors flee the tech selloff, one mega cap keeps pulling more capital in the opposite direction, and the reasoning has nothing to do with hoping for a rebound.
I bought Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL | GOOGL Price Prediction) again last week, and if the tech market keeps wobbling I plan to buy it again next week. Every time the AI trade coughs, I look at what this company earns, what it owns, and what it is building, and I add. I want a business that mints cash, dominates its category, owns real optionality in the technology shift that will define the next decade, and trades at a price a retirement account can live with. Alphabet is the only mega cap giving me all four in one line item.
Cash Machine Priced Like A Utility
GOOGL trades at a P/E of 16, an earnings yield of 6.44%, a return on equity of 35.70%, and a return on invested capital of 29.60%. Operating margin is 32.06%, debt-to-equity is 0.143, and interest coverage is 175.5x. Full-year 2025 revenue crossed $402.84 billion, free cash flow was $73.27 billion, and R&D spend reached $61.087 billion. That is a company earning like a supermajor while carrying a balance sheet cleaner than most utilities.
AI Growth Already Booked
Q2 FY2026 revenue was $119.80 billion, up 24.23% year over year, with EPS of $9.11 versus a $3.0427 estimate. That was the 11th straight EPS beat and 12th consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth. Google Cloud revenue accelerated to $24.77 billion, up 82%, and Q1 backlog nearly doubled quarter over quarter to over $460 billion. Search generated $63.27 billion, up 17%, YouTube ads were $11.06 billion, up 13%, the Gemini App reached 950 million monthly active users, and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. Sundar Pichai put it plainly: “Our differentiated, full stack approach to AI is delivering real, measurable value.”
Why Not Microsoft Or Meta
Readers will ask why not Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) or Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META). Both are quality operators. What keeps my incremental dollar going to Alphabet is the stack. GOOGL owns the models (Gemini), the custom silicon (TPUs), the distribution (Search, Android, Chrome, YouTube, Maps, Play), the hyperscale cloud, and Waymo running 500,000 fully autonomous rides per week. I am paying 16 times earnings for that combination. Peers trade at richer multiples for narrower stacks.
Risk I Actually Own
The real risk is the checkbook. Management guided 2026 capital expenditures to $175 billion to $185 billion. Q2 free cash flow was negative $5.86 billion. Long-term debt jumped from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion, interest expense rose nearly 5x year over year, and the buyback was suspended in Q2 2026. If AI demand rolls over, that spend becomes a stranded asset problem. Two things keep the thesis intact: the $460B cloud backlog is contracted revenue, and 29.60% ROIC shows this company converts capital into returns.
Forward Conviction
The stock is up 39.05% over one year and 150.63% over five, and management raised the dividend 5% to $0.22 per quarter. I own a compounder buying the arms and the ammunition for the AI decade at 15 times earnings while paying me a small, growing check. Every selloff is a discount on that math, and the buy button stays warm.
