IREN Slides 5% as Anthropic Cloud Report Buzz Fades; Core Scientific Falls 3%

A published report put a famous AI lab's name on IREN's mystery cloud contract, shares jumped, then buyers thought twice. Now neither company is talking, and the silence is doing real damage to the stock price.

A long, symmetrical shot down a hallway in a dark blue data center. Rows of black server racks with glowing blue and green lights stretch into the distance on both the left and right sides. A large, bright blue graphic of a stylized computer chip with the letters 'AI' in white is projected onto the ceiling, casting an inverted reflection of itself onto the concrete floor. The scene is futuristic and highly technological.

IREN Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) stock is down 4% to $33.18 as the market’s enthusiasm surrounding an apparently unconfirmed report naming Anthropic as a customer fades. That report gave IREN a customer name with no contract attached, and the gap between the two explains much of the retreat.

Meanwhile, Core Scientific (NASDAQ:CORZ) stock is down 3% to $14.51, a slightly smaller decline than IREN stock. The company is a direct IREN peer following a similar conversion path.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down 0.1% to $777.48, leaving the index close to flat. Data center stocks are lower, with the Global X Data Center & Digital Infrastructure ETF (NASDAQ:DTCR) down 0.9% to $27.49.

Anthropic Report Arrives Without Confirmation or Terms

A published report identified Anthropic, the privately held artificial intelligence (AI) lab, as the customer behind a multiyear AI cloud contract IREN had previously disclosed without naming the counterparty. Talk of the match circulated ahead of the previous session, when IREN shares rose, and Barron’s tied that jump to Anthropic being the mystery customer. Neither company has confirmed the report, and no contract terms have been made public.

IREN’s own disclosures leave the identity open. On its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results call in late August, management announced a new contract with a leading frontier AI lab whose name wasn’t disclosed. The transcript doesn’t mention Anthropic at all. The report adds only a possible name.

Former Miners Share the Pullback

Both companies are rebuilding around a similar idea. Vertical integration defines IREN’s model. The company owns the power, land and data centers behind its AI cloud platform and rents computing capacity to customers while converting former Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) mining sites to that use. Core Scientific operates data centers on a comparable conversion path, and another former miner moved into AI infrastructure after signing a long-term lease with a frontier AI lab.

That overlap places the decline in Core Scientific stock inside a broader pullback across data center names (we covered seven of the suppliers supporting that AI expansion, from power to cooling, in a free report). IREN stock carries an added layer after climbing on the Anthropic talk before falling.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT | MSFT Price Prediction) is the confirmed hyperscaler customer behind IREN’s most concrete progress. In August, IREN delivered its first liquid-cooled computing deployment to Microsoft and said its capacity for the year was largely sold out. Separately, Microsoft reported a gain on its Anthropic investment in its latest quarter, a sign of how closely the AI customer base overlaps.

Daniel Roberts, IREN’s co-founder and co-CEO at the time of the August call, asserted, “The most sophisticated buyers of AI infrastructure in the world keep choosing us.” A named frontier lab could strengthen that claim, yet the report carries weight only to the extent that a confirmation follows.

What to Watch Next

The open question is whether IREN or Anthropic confirms the report with contract terms, and progress on the next liquid-cooled deployments for Microsoft could offer a clearer read on execution. Investors may want to size their positions with the unconfirmed report in mind.

On the bullish side, IREN has already confirmed a Microsoft delivery and a largely sold-out year, both grounded in its own reporting. The bear case is that an unverified headline has now lifted and then dragged IREN stock, and silence from both companies could leave the shares without a fresh catalyst. For Core Scientific, the upside thesis rests on colocation demand from large computing customers; the bear case is that it trades with the group without a company-specific catalyst.
