Netflix Q3 Earnings Coverage Wrap-Up

That wraps up our initial coverage of Netflix’s Q3 results. Thank you for stopping by!

Netflix Bought Back a Record $4.8B in Stock (and There's More Coming Soon)

During the third quarter, Netflix repurchased 63.9 million shares for $4.8 billion, marking the company’s largest quarter of stock buybacks ever.

Netflix still has another $22.3 billion remaining under its existing repurchase authorizations, suggesting substantial capacity for additional buybacks.

The company generated $2.88 billion in free cash flow during the quarter, up from $2.66 billion a year earlier. However, management slightly reduced its full-year free cash flow forecast from $12.5 billion to approximately $12 billion, primarily because of the expected timing of a real estate transaction.

The aggressive repurchase program could provide an additional tailwind to earnings per share by reducing the number of shares outstanding.

With Netflix stock down nearly 50% over the past year and analysts seeing significant upside, management may be taking advantage of the lower share price to repurchase stock at an attractive valuation.

Netflix's Earnings Jumped 49% on Soaring Margins

Netflix’s third-quarter results highlight just how profitable the streaming giant has become.

The company reported $12.87 billion in revenue, up 12% year over year, while operating income climbed 37% to $4.46 billion.

Netflix’s operating margin expanded to 34.6%, up from 28.2% in the year-ago quarter. That represents a substantial 640-basis-point improvement, although management noted that expense timing contributed to the better-than-expected results.

The company expects its full-year operating margin to reach 31.5%, compared with 29.5% in 2025.

Continued pricing increases, membership expansion, and operating leverage could support further profit growth, although quarterly margins may fluctuate.

Netflix Just Cut Its Advertising Revenue Forecast by $300 Million

Netflix delivered a strong third quarter, but one important part of its growth story is falling short of expectations.

The streaming giant now expects around $2.7 billion in advertising revenue for 2026, down from its previous forecast of roughly $3 billion.

Management attributed the shortfall to a slower-than-expected rollout of certain advertising product capabilities, rather than weakness in subscription revenue, which has actually exceeded expectations.

Netflix now expects full-year revenue of $51.1 billion, representing 13% year-over-year growth and about 0.2% below the midpoint of its previous guidance.

The company is still aggressively expanding its advertising business, with plans to introduce its ad-supported tier in 15 additional countries in 2027.

For investors, Netflix’s subscription business appears to remain healthy, but its advertising expansion is taking longer than management initially anticipated.

Netflix Q3 Earnings Are Out - Stock Drops 4% Despite Strong Operating Margins

Netflix (NFLX) just reported third-quarter earnings, with shares initially down 3% following the report. Here are the key numbers:

  • Revenue: $12.87 billion vs. $12.87 billion expected
  • EPS: $0.87 vs. $0.82 expected
  • Operating Margin: 34.6%, up from 28.2% a year ago

Guidance:

  • Q4 Revenue: $13.44 billion, representing 11.5% year-over-year growth
  • Q4 Operating Margin: 26.0%
  • FY2026 Revenue: $51.1 billion
  • FY2026 Operating Margin: 31.5%
  • FY2026 Advertising Revenue: About $2.7 billion, down from the previous outlook of roughly $3 billion

Quick Read:

  • Earnings beat, but shares fall: Netflix topped EPS expectations by 6.1%, while revenue matched estimates and grew 12% year over year. Operating margins expanded significantly.
  • Advertising outlook disappoints: Netflix lowered its 2026 advertising revenue outlook from approximately $3 billion to $2.7 billion, potentially overshadowing an otherwise solid quarter and helping explain the initial selloff.

Q2 showed the problem clearly: a slim earnings beat could not offset revenue missing expectations, and the market punished the miss hard. That is why tonight's report hinges on whether advertising and margin expansion can carry the top line.

That low doubles as the lower support shelf, so a disappointing quarter puts the stock straight into untested territory. A strong one has to clear $72.58 before the 50-day even comes into play.

Tue, Oct 20 Earnings call · after close

Every recurring analyst thread on this call, from ad-tier monetization and ARM growth to pricing and membership, surfaced fresh in Q2 26, leaving management to improvise on each tonight. Ad-tier monetization is the one most likely to decide the after-hours move, since it ties directly to the doubling in ad revenue flagged earlier today. Engagement quality and the content slate are the follow-ups that could reframe the margin story.

Netflix walks into tonight's report with its net debt position cut by more than half since Q3 2024, down to roughly $5.2 billion in Q2 2026 as equity climbed past $30 billion. That gives management room to keep funding content and buybacks even if ad revenue growth disappoints, so the balance sheet is a cushion here.

Netflix Is Down 25% in 2026. Why Q3 Earnings Tonight Could Change Everything

Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) is expected to report third-quarter earnings at 4:05 PM ET today, with management targeting $12.86 billion in revenue and a 33.2% operating margin. Investors will be watching closely for signs that the streaming giant can deliver stronger profitability alongside continued revenue growth.

Advertising will be a major focus tonight. Netflix expects ad revenue to roughly double to $3 billion in 2026.

With shares down 25.49% year to date and trading at roughly 22 times earnings, expectations have fallen. The average analyst price target stands at $91.13 vs. today’s $69.53 share price, while management believes Netflix has penetrated less than 45% of its addressable households.

Strong margins and accelerating ad revenue could help revive confidence in Netflix’s long-term growth potential. However, a disappointing quarter could reinforce concerns that the company’s growth is beginning to mature.

The story so far

Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX | NFLX Price Prediction) is expected to report Q3 earnings today at 4:05 PM ET. The stock is down 41.75% over the past year, and this report will test whether slower content costs as a percentage of revenue finally produces the margin gains management has promised.

Solid Q2 Results the Market Shrugged Off

Last quarter, revenue reached $12.56B, up 13.4% YoY and just shy of the $12.58B estimate. EPS of $0.80 exceeded expectations of $0.79, and operating margin hit 33.4%, slightly ahead of the company’s internal target.

All four geographic regions grew by double digits, with Latin America leading at 21%. Free cash flow fell to $1.53B from $2.27B because of higher cash tax payments. Shares dropped 7.26% on earnings day despite a record $4.7B buyback quarter.

Tonight’s Q3 Consensus Estimates

Metric Q3 2026 Estimate YoY Change FY 2026 Estimate FY 2027 Estimate
Revenue $12.88B +11.9% $51.21B $56.98B
EPS $0.82 N/M $3.58 $3.81

Consensus for tonight’s results sits right on top of management’s own guidance of $0.82 in EPS, which leaves little room for error. The year-ago EPS of $5.87 was reported before the split and included a roughly $619M Brazilian tax charge, so a clean YoY comparison doesn’t really make sense. EPS estimates have also slid from $0.84 90 days ago.

What I’m Watching Tonight: Ad Growth, Content Amortization and Live Sports

The first thing I’m watching tonight is advertising revenue. Management said the gap between ad-tier and standard-tier monetization is “essentially near-term under-realized revenue growth.” I’m also looking for updates on how the U.S. upfront negotiations closed and how programmatic Pause Ads and live inventory are doing.

Next, investors are going to be watching margins. Content amortization (content costs) ran heavy in the first half of the year, and management guided full-year content amortization growth of about 10%, with a cost slowdown in the second half of the year. Market-based forecasts put a 66.5% chance of a 32-34% operating margin.

Pricing and engagement come third. Price increases in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain are tracking to plan, and view hours rose 2% in the first half.

Live events matter here too for growing the top of the funnel. 6 out of the top 10 new-member sign-up days in the past five years came from live programming, and the larger NFL schedule starts this fall.

Finally, analysts will be watching whether full-year free cash flow guidance of about $12.5B holds, with $1B of debt maturing later in 2026.
