Trump Media Drops 4% as Selling Pressure Persists; Rumble Edges Higher
Truth Social's parent company keeps bleeding while its closest rival edges into the green, and the investigation hanging over one of Trump Media's newer revenue streams may explain why sellers are still in charge.
Selling pressure on the parent company of Truth Social persists as regulatory questions surrounding its Truth API data product remain open. Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ:DJT) stock is down 4% to $6.36 this morning, a move that extends a steep decline this year and keeps sellers in control. The Truth API scrutiny stands as the most visible open issue attached to the shares.
Meanwhile, Rumble (NASDAQ:RUM) stock is up 0.6% to $5.58. Both companies court audiences looking for alternatives to the largest mainstream platforms, so the split in direction points to pressure that’s specific to Trump Media.
For a sector read, the Global X Social Media ETF (NASDAQ:SOCL) is up 0.1% to $43.09. As a benchmark for U.S. large caps, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down 0.2% to $762.69. Neither fund comes close to the size of the decline in Trump Media stock, which keeps the focus on company-specific concerns.
Truth API Scrutiny Keeps Pressure on Trump Media
At a media industry event on October 20, Trump Media CEO Kevin McGurn declined to comment on investigations into Truth API, saying some of them are ongoing. McGurn described Truth API as a cash-positive business, offering the clearest public signal of how management views the product’s economics. Some members of Congress have called for the investigations, which leaves a regulatory question hanging over one of Trump Media’s newer revenue sources.
Truth API sells faster access to posts from Truth Social’s top trending accounts, presenting the platform’s activity as a data feed for paying customers. Because the product’s appeal rests on speed, open investigations put a question mark over a business line Trump Media’s management has singled out, so until the inquiries conclude, Trump Media stock carries that uncertainty alongside its steep slide this year.
Rumble’s Gain Isolates the Selloff at Trump Media
Rumble runs a video platform alongside a cloud business, while Trump Media’s operations center on Truth Social. That different revenue mix helps explain why the two stocks are moving in opposite directions.
The Global X Social Media ETF holds both Trump Media and Rumble, though each makes up only a small slice of the fund. Most of the ETF’s weight sits with larger platform and internet operators, so a sharp move in Trump Media stock barely affects the fund’s price, which shows how the sector fund can edge higher while Trump Media shares trade lower.
The bull case for Trump Media centers on a product. Its chief executive calls it cash-positive, while the bear case points to open investigations and a steep slide this year. Rumble’s bulls can point to a cloud business that broadens its revenue, while bears may note it still competes with far larger platforms for audiences.
Truth API Probes Set Up Trump Media’s Next Test
The focus will be on whether selling pressure on Trump Media eases as the investigations move forward. McGurn has said some of the investigations are ongoing, and the company’s next public update on Truth API could show whether that status has changed. Clear answers on that front could matter more to Trump Media stock than daily moves in Rumble shares or the broader social media group.
With the inquiries still open, Trump Media stock carries a regulatory question beyond the company’s control. Investors considering their DJT stock exposure can adjust their holdings carefully until that question resolves.
