If You Invested $1,000 in NRG Energy 10 Years Ago, Even This Year’s Sell-Off Wouldn’t Erase Your Gains
NRG Energy shed its coal-heavy past, swallowed a smart home company, and doubled its power fleet, yet 2026 has been brutal to shareholders. The question now is whether a single massive data center bet can rescue the year or hand…
Ten years ago, NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG | NRG Price Prediction) was a debt-heavy power generator running mostly on coal and gas. Since October 28, 2016, its shares have gained 1,046.71% on an adjusted-price basis. This morning they trade at $96.34, even after a 38.91% drop so far in 2026.
How a Coal-Heavy Generator Became a Power, Retail and Smart Home Platform
The turnaround began in 2017 and 2018, when activist investors Elliott Management and Bluescape pushed through a Transformation Plan. NRG sold its renewables arm and some conventional plants, cut debt, and leaned on its retail electricity brands, Reliant and Green Mountain.
Acquisitions came next. NRG bought Direct Energy for $3.6B in 2021, roughly doubling its retail customer base. It then paid about $5.2B for Vivint Smart Home in 2023. In January 2026, it closed the LS Power deal, adding 13 GW of gas generation and doubling its fleet. NRG now serves about eight million customers.
Two Earnings Misses Took the Air Out of 2026
LS Power lifted EBITDA but also brought higher interest expense and depreciation. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.49 in both Q1 and Q2, missing estimates of $1.7333 and $1.7401. Houston ERCOT power prices averaged $33 per megawatt-hour in Q2, well under NRG’s $52 planning assumption. Management now expects to finish below the midpoint of its 2026 guidance.

The S&P 500 figures track the share price of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY). The decade belongs to the restructuring and the power-demand boom, and the stock beat the index over five and ten years. Timing still mattered a great deal. Anyone who bought near the $179.50 price at the Q4 2025 report has watched it fall sharply.
What Could Move NRG Before the Q3 Report
The bull case rests on its Texas data center deal closing on schedule. That project would use 1.2 gigawatts of new capacity, and NRG expects it to generate $500 million of annual adjusted EBITDA at full operation (we profiled seven suppliers riding the same data-center buildout, from power to cooling, in a free report you can grab here). Add $1 billion in annual buybacks and a $1.90 annualized dividend, and the bull case has concrete numbers.
The bear case centers on the project stalling. NRG hasn’t reached a final investment decision, and the plan pushes its 3x leverage target out to 2029. Total liabilities stand at $35.085 billion.
The bull case has merit. Still, a third miss would be hard to brush off, so investors will want to keep an eye on the stock until NRG reports on November 9, 2026.
