IonQ Just Dropped 32% In a Month: Is IONQ Stock Hopeless or Ready for a Rebound?

IonQ has posted record revenue five quarters running, struck a deal with NVIDIA, and swallowed a billion-dollar acquisition, yet the stock has cratered 32% in a month. Something in that math does not add up, and figuring out which side…

Quantum computing stocks have spent the past month giving back ground, and IonQ (NYSE:IONQ | IONQ Price Prediction) sits near the center of the slide. IonQ stock is down 32% over the past month, recently trading at $29.70. Shares are up 5% from the prior close, a modest bounce after a steep decline.

The selloff has hit the whole group, which suggests IonQ is moving with its sector as risk appetite for speculative technology cools off. Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI) stock is down 28% over the past month to $10.94. Meanwhile, D-Wave Quantum (NASDAQ:QBTS) shares have slid 35% over the past month to $10.23, a steeper fall than IonQ’s.

For IonQ, the pullback has come even after a strong second quarter and a string of acquisitions, leaving investors to figure out whether the slide points to lasting problems at IonQ or a correction across the whole sector.

Record Growth Gives IonQ Bulls Plenty to Point To

IonQ’s Q2 2026 revenue rose 287% year over year to a record $80.1 million in results released on August 5. Excluding acquisitions, IonQ grew 132% organically. CEO Niccolo de Masi spoke on the earnings call. He said that “Q2 2026 is the strongest quarter in IonQ’s history and our fifth consecutive quarter of record results.”

Management’s 2026 revenue outlook for IonQ now includes the SkyWater Technology acquisition, which closed July 31, and calls for $450 million to $460 million. That $1.8 billion deal brought a semiconductor foundry in-house. On the hardware side, IonQ is developing its 256-qubit Superion system, and management plans to start commissioning those systems in 2027.

In September, IonQ announced a quantum computing partnership with NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). A pending acquisition of Elisity would add to IonQ’s quantum security business.

Wall Street remains mostly bullish on IonQ, with 11 Buy ratings and one Hold over the past three months. The average analyst price target on IonQ stands at $65.45.

Losses and Integration Risk Weigh on IonQ

IonQ’s Q2 adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) came in at negative $120.3 million, and its operating expenses reached $417.3 million. Under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), IonQ’s net loss hit $1.9 billion, mostly because of a $1.6 billion non-cash warrant revaluation the company disclosed.

All the acquisitions make IonQ’s organic growth harder to judge. Folding in SkyWater could also put pressure on IonQ’s margins. On the August call, IonQ CFO Inder Singh said, “So don’t draw a straight line up into the right from any one of the data points.”

The commercial return for IonQ still depends on how well it executes and how fast customers adopt quantum tools. Quantum stocks have also been volatile. As the past month’s drops at Rigetti and D-Wave show, that volatility is exactly why speculative names like these belong in a small, rules-based allocation of a portfolio (we laid out the sizing and exit rules in a free guide here).

How IonQ’s Business Differs From Rigetti and D-Wave

IonQ builds trapped-ion quantum computers and sells a full platform covering computing, networking, sensing and security, while Rigetti uses superconducting qubits at a smaller scale and D-Wave works on quantum annealing, which suits a different class of problems.

With SkyWater and Nexus Photonics, IonQ now handles chip manufacturing and integrated photonics itself, a vertically integrated model its two peers don’t share.

IonQ’s Third-Quarter Report Could Reset the Debate

Q3 2026 results from IonQ arrive on November 5, after the market close. Analysts expect a loss of $0.34 per share, compared with a $3.58 loss a year earlier. Investors will be watching whether organic revenue keeps growing apart from acquired sales and whether SkyWater weighs on margins.

IONQ price scenario

Bulls have record revenue, a bigger outlook and an active hardware roadmap on their side. IonQ’s bears point to deep losses, heavy spending and a sector subject to sharp swings. Whether IonQ looks hopeless or ready for a rebound depends on which of those lists the coming quarters back up.

Investors can watch for updates on the Superion timeline and on SkyWater’s margins in the upcoming report. Cautious traders may want to see how the debate over IonQ’s margins settles before drawing any firm conclusions.
