On September 25, 2026, a team of researchers from [alloc] init, a cryptography lab in New York, released a proposal aiming to enable Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) users to make private transactions utilizing the cryptography that powers Zcash (CRYPTO: ZEC). Dubbed Shielded Bitcoin, the paper comes as Zcash has surged nearly 96% in a month, reaching its highest level in nearly a decade.
The paper’s authors, Clara Shikhelman, Mikhail Komarov, and Aleksei Moskvin, believe their design can provide privacy for Bitcoin transactions without changing Bitcoin’s underlying rules. However, this raises questions: Does this privacy solution benefit Zcash holders, or does it make Bitcoin a competitor to Zcash’s unique offerings?
How Shielded Bitcoin Hides BTC Payments Without a Soft Fork

Currently, every Bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public blockchain. Although Bitcoin addresses aren’t linked to real names, blockchain analytics firms can track users’ activity through these addresses. Zcash addresses this issue with shielded transactions that conceal the sender, receiver, and transaction amount. It also employs zero-knowledge proofs, allowing the network to validate a transaction without revealing any transaction details.
With Shielded Bitcoin, users would hold encrypted notes that document transaction amounts and recipients, along with a proof that verifies ownership and balance without exposing sensitive information.
What’s more, this proposal would function as a metaprotocol, meaning it would operate as an additional layer on top of Bitcoin. In this way, Bitcoin would only record and arrange the encrypted data while a separate system would manage asset ownership. This approach eliminates the need for a soft fork— a significant change that requires consensus among developers, miners, and node operators.
Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang previously referred to Zcash as a private complement to Bitcoin. If Bitcoin gains its own privacy features, Zcash may find itself in a more competitive position rather than a supportive role.
Shielded Bitcoin Still Can’t Move Coins In or Out

Despite its potential, the proposal leaves one critical issue unresolved. Users currently lack a way to move standard BTC into the shielded system and back. The researchers plan to address this with Bitcoin PIPEs, an experimental method based on witness encryption. However, the specifics of this mechanism have not yet been published.
Additionally, these entry and exit points could introduce risks, as observers might track transactions entering and exiting the shielded system, even if the payments within remain hidden. To assess the robustness of Shielded Bitcoin, [alloc] init has opened the design to public testing, inviting researchers to identify any vulnerabilities before practical implementation begins. For now, Shielded Bitcoin remains a theoretical concept, and a functional version may take considerable time to develop.
Zcash’s 96% Rally Started Before the Shielded Bitcoin Paper

Zcash’s price was rising well before the release of the Shielded Bitcoin paper. Grayscale’s Zcash ETF began trading in the U.S. in late August, and ZEC surpassed $1,000 just two weeks later. Paradigm publicly disclosed its ZEC holdings on September 16, although about 83% of ZEC’s increase since July occurred before the announcement.
Interest in Zcash has also expanded, with 21Shares launching a Zcash exchange-traded product in Paris and Amsterdam on September 22. Holders can now store shielded ZEC on Ledger hardware wallets via the Vizor app. Overall, privacy-focused cryptocurrencies have added $24.5 billion in market value over the last five months.
Nevertheless, Zcash’s surge has not been without volatility. The price peaked above $1,600 on September 23, its highest point in nearly a decade, then fell 6% the next day.
Does Shielded Bitcoin Help or Hurt Zcash Holders?
At this stage, the Shielded Bitcoin paper primarily lends credibility to Zcash rather than driving new demand. By choosing Zcash’s cryptography as the basis for private Bitcoin transactions, the paper reinforces the potential of Zcash’s technology. However, if Shielded Bitcoin launches and works as designed, it may reduce the incentive for users to buy ZEC, jeopardizing Zcash’s unique advantage.
Until the entry and exit mechanisms are developed and the design passes public testing, factors like rising ETF interest and growing demand for privacy are more likely to influence ZEC’s price than a theoretical Bitcoin paper. As the market fluctuates, those buying ZEC around $1,600 should remain cautious about potential dips similar to the recent 6% decline after its ten-year high.
