Litecoin at $500 or Bitcoin at $200,000: Which Happens First?

Litecoin is surging while Bitcoin grinds higher, and both coins are chasing price targets that would shatter their all-time records. The math behind each race reveals a surprising twist about which one gets there first.

Litecoin (CRYPTO:LTC) needs to rise about 604% to hit $500, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) needs about 136% to reach $200,000. Both goals exceed each coin’s all-time high, so a simple market recovery won’t be enough to reach these levels. So, which one will break through first: Litecoin at $500 or Bitcoin at $200,000?

Recently, Litecoin has shown stronger momentum. As of September 27, 2026, its price surged by 47% in just a month, climbing to around $71. In comparison, Bitcoin rose only 8%, moving close to $84,883. However, both cryptocurrencies are still underperforming for the year—Litecoin is down about 6%, and Bitcoin is down about 4%.

Litecoin Needs a 604% Gain and a New Record to Reach $500

The recent rally in Litecoin isn’t just a one-month phenomenon. Over the past 60 days, the coin has risen roughly 58%, and it has jumped around 69% over the last 90 days.

One factor in this increase was Grayscale’s filing to convert its Litecoin trust into a spot ETF on September 11, drawing more interest from traders. Yet, Litecoin is still down about 31% over the past year, meaning it has only reclaimed part of what it lost during the downturn.

To reach the $500 target, Litecoin must not only recover its losses but also surpass its previous all-time high of about $410 set back in May 2021. This means a climb of around 22% above its record peak.

When considering market value, achieving this climb is no small feat. Currently, Litecoin’s market cap stands at around $5.6 billion, based on a supply of approximately 77.65 million coins in circulation.

If Litecoin were to reach $500, its market value would skyrocket to about $39 billion, nearly seven times its current size. Additionally, as new coins are mined, the total market cap could reach around $42 billion when the full supply of 84 million coins is in circulation.

Bitcoin Needs a 136% Gain, but $2.3 Trillion More in Value

Conversely, Bitcoin requires a smaller percentage increase but a much more significant dollar amount to hit $200,000. This target is approximately 59% above its previous record of $126,080 set in October 2025. One wealth manager has said Bitcoin could reach this milestone by 2027.

Bitcoin’s current market cap is around $1.7 trillion, which represents about 58.6% of the total crypto market valued at $2.91 trillion. If Bitcoin were to hit $200,000, its market cap alone would approach $4 trillion, a figure that exceeds the entire current value of the crypto market. For this to happen, significant capital must flow into Bitcoin, either through new investors or by reallocating funds from other cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin’s growth has been more stable than Litecoin’s. Over the past 90 days, Bitcoin gained about 42%, clearing the $85,000 mark in September for the first time since January. However, it is still down approximately 23% over the last year, which means that some holders who purchased at higher prices might sell as it rebounds.

Why Bitcoin Could Reach $200,000 Months Before Litecoin Hits $500

Despite Litecoin’s recent sharp rise, Bitcoin’s momentum could provide it with a faster path to its target. If Bitcoin continues its upward trend based on its 90-day average pace, it could reach $200,000 in around seven months. Meanwhile, even with its rapid pace, Litecoin might take approximately 11 months to hit $500.

However, sustained growth is never guaranteed. Although Litecoin’s smaller market size means a single dollar can impact its price more significantly—both in terms of gains and losses—the volatility also poses risks. In September, Litecoin, along with other smaller coins like Cardano, Stellar, and Chainlink, outperformed Bitcoin for a week. However, growth in smaller cryptocurrencies can sometimes fade quickly.

Bitcoin enjoys a much broader buyer base. Institutions and companies that hold cryptocurrencies often favor Bitcoin over others when investing, contributing to its more stable demand compared to Litecoin, which is primarily used for payments.

Which Comes First, Litecoin at $500 or Bitcoin at $200,000?

Ultimately, it seems more likely that Bitcoin will hit $200,000 before Litecoin reaches $500. Although neither target is near at the moment, Bitcoin’s path appears clearer. The smaller percentage increase required for Bitcoin, combined with its momentum and ability to attract new investment, makes it a strong contender for reaching its goal first.

Bitcoin’s initial challenge will be surpassing the $100,000 mark—about 18% above its current price—before aiming for its all-time high of $126,080. On the other hand, for Litecoin to stay in the race, it needs to turn its 2026 performance positive and break above $100, around 41% higher than where it currently stands, before it can reach its peak of $410.

However, if Bitcoin stalls below $100,000 and the gains made in September reverse, it’s possible that both targets could be pushed back into the next market cycle. In such a scenario, Litecoin investors might face sharper losses due to the coin’s smaller market size.
