Which Major Cryptocurrency Has the Most Potential for Growth? Ranking Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana by Distance from Their All-Time Highs

Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana all crashed from their 2025 peaks, but one of them stands out as having a uniquely powerful combination of factors that could fuel a sharper recovery than the others.

As of September 30, 2026, Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) needs to climb about 148% to reach its all-time high, which puts it ahead of XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), and Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) in terms of potential recovery. All four cryptocurrencies reached their peak values within nine months of each other in 2025, but currently, they all trade significantly lower than those highs.

Investors often assume that the cryptocurrency furthest from its peak has the most potential for recovery. However, this belief overlooks critical factors like each coin’s market capitalization and the circumstances behind its price drop. So, which cryptocurrency truly has the most room to grow, and is distance from a previous high the best measure of that?

Solana and XRP Trade Nearly 60% Below Their All-Time Highs

Currently, Solana is trading around $118, which is 59.6% below its peak of $293 set on January 19, 2025. XRP, meanwhile, trades at $1.50, down 58.9% from its all-time high of $3.65 in July 2025. This positions Solana and XRP close together in terms of price recovery needs.

Solana’s record is the oldest among the four major cryptocurrencies. Investors who bought in January 2025 have endured the longest period of losses and may sell once the price approaches their purchase levels, potentially hindering any rally back to $293.

In contrast, XRP holders bought during the stronger mid-2025 rally. Still, XRP needs a hefty 143% gain to return to its peak.

Ethereum currently trades at about $2,663, which is 46.2% below its all-time high of $4,946 set on August 24, 2025. This means it needs an 86% increase to return to its peak. While this drop is significant enough to affect some investors, it’s not as severe as those in Solana or XRP.

Bitcoin, priced at approximately $83,070, is only 34.1% below its all-time high of $126,080 from October 6, 2025. This is the smallest gap among the four major cryptocurrencies, and Bitcoin often holds up well during sell-offs due to its popularity among institutional investors. It also makes up about 58% of the entire crypto market.

A Smaller Market Cap Lets Solana’s Price Move Further

Market capitalization—the product of a coin’s price and its circulating supply—indicates how much investment is needed to move a cryptocurrency’s price. With Bitcoin’s market cap at $1.67 trillion, it’s roughly 24 times larger than Solana’s $69.6 billion. This means that each dollar invested in Solana generally has a greater impact on its price than the same dollar does for Bitcoin.

Coin Price Percentage Below Record Gain Needed to Record Market Cap
Solana $118 -59.6% +148% $69.6 billion
XRP $1.50 -58.9% +143% $94.5 billion
Ethereum $2,663 -46.2% +86% $325 billion
Bitcoin $83,070 -34.1% +52% $1.67 trillion

Solana has both the largest drop and the smallest market cap, while Bitcoin has the smallest drop and the largest market cap. XRP falls nearly in line with Solana’s drop, but its market cap of $94.5 billion is about 36% larger.

XRP Keeps Falling in 2026 While Solana Holds Steady

In 2026, Solana has declined just 1.6%, making it the most stable of the four cryptocurrencies, despite experiencing a 41.9% drop over the past year. Most of Solana’s losses occurred in late 2025, and since January, its price has remained relatively stable.

Bitcoin shows a similar trend, down 3.8% in 2026 against a 25% drop over the past year, indicating that most of its decline happened between October 2025 and the end of that year. Ethereum has decreased by 9.9% in 2026 and 35.5% over the year.

However, XRP has faced the most significant challenges, dropping 17.1% in 2026 and 46.8% over the year. This decline has continued even as spot XRP ETFs took in $38 million in two days in September, suggesting XRP’s struggles are ongoing while Solana’s price has held steady.

Solana Has the Most Room to Run Back to Its All-Time High

In summary, Solana has the most room for growth among the four cryptocurrencies. It has the largest climb to return to its all-time high, the smallest market cap, and has shown resilience in 2026. However, simply looking at distance from a high may not fully capture each coin’s potential.

XRP shows a similar drop to Solana but continues to decline, suggesting ongoing market pressure. Solana also faces past challenges, including network outages and a group of older investors who may want to sell near $293. If Solana falls below $118, while Bitcoin remains steady above $83,000, it will raise questions about whether Solana’s quiet performance in 2026 is a foundation for future growth or merely a pause in its decline.
