TRON Is the Only Top-25 Coin Down This Month, Yet It Sits Closer to Its All-Time High Than Any Major. XRP Is 62% Below Its Own. Which Payments Chain Is Winning?
Two blockchains both claim to be the future of payments, yet one sits near its all-time high while the other has lost nearly two-thirds of its peak value. The gap between them raises a question that transaction data alone cannot…

TRON (CRYPTO:TRX) is trading at just 23.6% below its peak of $0.43, reached on December 3, 2024. Over the last 30 days, TRON has fallen 3.1%, and in the past week, it has dropped 2.1%. At $0.33, TRON remains much closer to its all-time high than XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), which is currently 62.2% below its record.
XRP is trading at $1.36, up 1.3% over the last month, but down 8.0% in the past week. For XRP to reach its prior peak again, it needs to increase by about 2.6 times. Both TRON and XRP are designed to facilitate value transfer and are marketed as payment rails. So, when we compare TRON and XRP, which payment chain is ahead, and based on what criteria?
TRON and XRP Were Built for Different Payment Jobs

TRON is often highlighted as an economical option for transferring stablecoins—tokens designed to maintain a consistent value, usually pegged to the U.S. dollar. The largest of these stablecoins is Tether (CRYPTO:USDT), which boasts a market capitalization of $184.05 billion. Tether operates across multiple blockchains, and TRON is one of them.
In contrast, the XRP Ledger is built specifically for settlement, the final stage in fund transfers when money is exchanged between banks or payment companies. Ripple, the company most associated with XRP, has marketed its ledger to banks and financial institutions as a quicker way to move money internationally.
However, relevant transaction counts and payment volumes for both networks aren’t readily available, making it difficult to compare their actual usage. Unlike transaction data, supply design and price behavior give investors a clearer way to assess the two cryptocurrencies.
TRON Has No Supply Cap but Has Held Its Value Better

XRP has a capped supply of 100 billion tokens, all of which already exist, meaning no new tokens can be created. In contrast, TRON has no maximum supply, and its circulating supply is approximately 95 billion tokens. This means TRON can issue new tokens indefinitely.
For investors, this difference can lead to dilution: when new tokens are introduced, each existing token represents a smaller share of the network’s total value. Thus, an unlimited-supply coin like TRON can dilute its value unless demand grows as fast as the supply. In contrast, a coin with a fixed supply like XRP doesn’t face this risk.
Surprisingly, TRON has been more price-stable. It currently trades 23.6% below its all-time high, with a market cap of $31.3 billion, making it the eighth-largest cryptocurrency. XRP, meanwhile, trades 62.2% below its peak. Furthermore, TRON has risen 2.3% over the past year, suggesting its holders have retained some value.
Which Payments Coin Is Winning, TRON or XRP?
On price stability, TRON clearly has the advantage, trading 23.6% below its December 2024 high versus XRP’s 62.2% drop. Moreover, TRON’s 2.3% price gain over the past year stands out. However, on actual usage, no leader is confirmed because transaction counts and stablecoin data aren’t readily available for comparison.
TRON’s extensive supply could affect its price if demand doesn’t keep pace, while XRP’s fixed supply can act as a buffer. Future demand for XRP could directly boost its price. If TRON’s circulating supply continues to grow beyond 95 billion without a corresponding increase in market value, that dilution could show up in its price. The balance could shift if XRP’s price gap to its all-time high shrinks below TRON’s 23.6%.
Until then, TRON remains ahead on stability, while the question of actual usage between the two chains remains unresolved.
