Solana Is Faster and Cheaper Than Ethereum. So Why Is ETH Worth 5 Times More?
Solana confirms transactions in 150 milliseconds and charges a fraction of what Ethereum does, yet investors keep pouring money into ETH at a nearly fivefold premium. The reasons behind that gap reveal something surprising about what Wall Street actually values…

Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) currently holds a market value approximately 4.8 times that of Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), even though Solana processes transactions faster and charges lower fees. As of October 22, 2026, Ethereum’s market cap stands at $293.5 billion, while Solana’s is $61.7 billion, making the disparity nearly five-to-one.
Interestingly, Solana has made significant strides recently, boosting its valuation. SOL has surged by 45% over the last 90 days, outpacing ETH’s 33% growth. Additionally, Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade has reduced its transaction finalization time to just 150 milliseconds.
Currently, ETH trades at $2,402, while SOL trades at $105, after minor declines of 2.6% and 2.1% over the past day. So, does Ethereum’s fivefold premium accurately reflect each network’s functions and potential?
Why Ethereum’s 4.8x Premium Reflects Investor Expectations

The market value of a cryptocurrency is calculated by multiplying its price by the total number of tokens in circulation, placing Ethereum second among all cryptocurrencies and Solana seventh. This ratio illustrates what investors believe each network could be worth in the future.
Investors typically favor ETH as a foundational platform for institutions and tokenized assets, such as bonds and shares represented as tokens on a blockchain. On the other hand, SOL attracts interest mainly for its speed and active trading, particularly in memecoins and low-cost payment transactions.
Recent developments further highlight Ethereum’s role in institutional finance. On October 19, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM | JPM Price Prediction) announced that its Kinexys division had introduced the JPM Coin deposit token on the Ethereum network for institutional clients. This deposit token functions as a digital claim on a bank deposit transacted on the blockchain. Macro investor Jordi Visser also mentioned Ethereum as one of “the most quality parts of crypto” during a discussion on the Pomp Podcast on October 17.
Ethereum Earns Less Than 2x Solana’s Fees, but Supply Favors ETH

When analyzing each cryptocurrency’s premium, chain revenue provides valuable insight. This metric represents the portion of transaction fees that returns to the network and its token holders, mostly through a process called burning, where tokens are permanently removed from circulation. Over a 30-day period, Ethereum generated $6.3 million in chain revenue compared to Solana’s $3.4 million—less than 2x.
If market values aligned more closely with network earnings, the gap would be significantly narrower, making a strong case for Solana supporters. However, revenue is often a better indicator of a network’s viability, since Solana’s transaction counts include validator votes and extensive automated bot trading that incur tiny fees.
Still, both networks’ revenue figures seem small relative to their hundreds-of-billions market valuations, suggesting speculation plays a significant role in their trading.
Supply dynamics, however, favor Ethereum. ETH has a circulating and total supply of around 122.2 million tokens, while Solana has 589.6 million SOL circulating out of a total of 636.2 million. Solana’s fully diluted valuation, which includes all existing tokens, stands at $66.5 billion, reflecting potential dilution for SOL holders, with an additional 46.6 million tokens yet to be issued.
ETF Investors Favor Ethereum Even More Than the Market Does

U.S. spot Ether ETFs manage assets totaling $15.4 billion, while U.S. spot Solana ETFs hold just $1.7 billion, according to SoSoValue. This 9x difference in ETF assets is even wider than the 4.8x market-value gap, suggesting institutional investors favor Ethereum even more than the broader crypto market.
Despite this, both ETFs struggled to attract new investment in October. Solana ETFs recorded a notable inflow of $86.7 million on September 25, their best performance of the month, but have seen continuous outflows since late September, aside from minor inflows on October 2 and a small $585,297 influx on October 21.
Ether ETFs have experienced larger raw dollar outflows, losing funds on most days in October, including a $201.9 million drop on October 6, although they did see a $15 million influx on October 21. As of now, total net inflows stand at $12.8 billion for Ether ETFs and $1.55 billion for Solana ETFs.
However, these figures don’t capture much of the trading activity. Over a 24-hour period, ETH saw around $13.3 billion in trading volume, while SOL saw about $2.9 billion, primarily through exchange order books that don’t interact with the blockchain, meaning chain revenue captures only a fraction of this activity.
Alpenglow Speeds Up Solana, but Wall Street Has Yet to Follow

Transaction finality is the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed, and the Alpenglow rollout has reduced it to just 150 milliseconds on Solana. While Solana was already known for its speed, this enhancement mainly benefits traders and payment applications. The bigger prize would be adoption by banks or asset managers, similar to how JPMorgan has chosen Ethereum for its settlement needs.
Both cryptocurrencies are currently trading significantly below their peak prices. SOL is down 64.4% from its all-time high of $293, set on January 19, 2025, while ETH is 51.4% below its record price of $4,946, set on August 24, 2025. Over the past year, SOL has dropped 40.5%, while ETH has dropped 35%.
Is the Ethereum vs Solana Gap Justified?
Overall, the current valuation gap between Ethereum and Solana seems justified. The difference in fee revenue alone could suggest a smaller disparity. However, when you factor in market expectations and potential future developments, the premium on Ethereum may reflect where investors believe both networks are headed.
