Redbox's Net Envy: Apps (CSTR, NFLX)

Some things never change.  When companies can’t get a message across, sometimes they just say the same over and over.  This morning came an announcement from Coinstar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSTR) that its
Redbox movie rental machines have released a whole new slate of Apps.  The claim is a “full suite of new and enhanced mobile and web tools” for Android and an upgraded iPhone app.

The claim is “KNIGHT AND DAY” access to the latest Blu-ray and DVD releases for consumers online and on the go… “from ELM STREET to WALL STREET.  Oh, and it is free in case you hadn’t been able to guess that a search app can’t really be sold.  Redbox’s new interactive portal will allow users to view and rent new release movies from more than 26,000 locations with real-time inventory access at any location.

Maybe this is just what happens after two big share price drops.  Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) is winning the war hands down and today’s news from Redbox just doesn’t really bring much.

Oh boy, another App! Now you can do what you could already do but without having to type out six letters and a “.com” in your smartphone.
