Can the 'Terminator' Knock 'Jurassic World' Down a Notch?

There are two new movies in wide release for this holiday weekend, and one is expected to replace “Jurassic World” as the weekend’s top grossing film. “Terminator: Genisys” from Paramount Studios and Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB) stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in a reboot of the franchise, and it is projected to pull in $56 million from 3,758 U.S. screens. “Jurassic World” from Universal Studios and Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is showing on more screens (4,198) but is projected to gross about $54 million in its fourth weekend.

Pixar and Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) are forecast to post ticket sales of $52 million for the animated feature “Inside Out,” which is still showing on 4,158 screens. “Magic Mike XXL” from Warner Bros. and Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX) is tabbed for gross ticket sales of $48 million on 3,355 screens. The forecasts come from Box Office Mojo.

Both “Terminator: Genisys” and “Magic Mike XXL” opened on Wednesday, and “Magic Mike” posted gross U.S. sales of $9.3 million, compared with $8.9 million for “Terminator.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fifth installment of the “Terminator” franchise cost $155 million to make, compared with a production budget of just $15 million for “Magic Mike.” Paramount was estimating the long, long weekend’s gross from “Terminator” at $55 million.

There is an outside chance that both “Inside Out” and “Jurassic World” will outsell both new movies at U.S. theaters this weekend. “Jurassic World” receipts dropped by 49% between its first and second weekends of release and another 49% between the second and third weekends. Gross receipts in its third weekend totaled $54.5 million. “Inside Out” dropped 42% between its first and second weekends to post receipts of $52.3 million last weekend.

What gives the older movies a fighting chance to hold their leads is the relatively poor reception that both “Terminator” and “Magic Mike” have received. According to Box Office Mojo, “Magic Mike” received a 59% “Fresh” rating and “Terminator” received a very poor 26% “Fresh” rating.
