'Warcraft' Is Most Pirated Movie

“Warcraft” has posted mediocre box office since it was released June 10. However, in the world of pirated content, it ranks first. Hollywood still faces file sharing as a problem that siphons off sales, sometimes to the extent that it badly damages revenue.

According to Torrent Freak, “Warcraft” was the most pirated movie for the week of July 11. Against a U.S. poor box office total of $37 million, of which $24 million came in the first week, according to Box Office Mojo, the data show that demand in theaters does not always match demand from pirates who steal movies on BitTorrent.

The second most pirated movie for the July 11 week was “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” It has been a massive hit at the box office. So far this year, its domestic ticket sales have hit $330 million, putting it in sixth place for box office receipts in 2016.

The third most pirated movie, “Me Before You,” had mediocre ticket sales, bringing in $55 million this year. In fourth place, “Independence Day: Resurgence,” which also posted mediocre box office at $99 million, well below the number producers expected because of all the hype about the release. In fifth place, “The Legend of Tarzan” had better ticket sales at $107 million.

Finally, the top-performing movie of the year, “Finding Dory,” with ticket sales of $450 million, was the seventh most pirated film, more evidence that ticket sales and piracy are not always connected.
