Wal-Mart Preps Green Monday Savings

courtesy of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Think of Green Monday as Black Friday or Cyber Monday Lite. The second Monday in December is the third-best sales day of the year, and Monday the 14th is this year’s edition of Green Monday. While the day does not attract the same frenzy as Black Friday, prices on some items have returned to Black Friday levels.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) advertises “Black Friday Prices” in the banner of its Green Monday ad brochure. But where the company’s Black Friday ads ran to 32 pages, Green Monday’s totals just five pages.

Missing from the promotions are big-screen TVs from Samsung and other makers, which figured prominently in Black Friday promotions. Wal-Mart’s sole big-screen TV offer for Green Monday is a 50-inch, 1080p Sceptre LED monitor for $329.99.

Wal-Mart continues to offer a 16GB version of Apple’s iPad mini 2 for $199, a savings of $69 off the usual price.

And for Green Monday only, Star Wars Battlefront from Electronic Arts will be available for $39.96, a savings of $20 from the usual price.

Another video game offer from Wal-Mart includes a Sony PlayStation 4 bundle comprised of the game controller, Star Wars Battlefront, and “a voucher containing four Star Wars Classics —Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Jedi Starfighter and Star Wars Bounty Hunter.” The package sells for $299 and the offer is good for Green Monday only. The bundle price is $50 lower than it was on Black Friday.

Wal-Mart notes that Green Monday mobile traffic tripled between 2012 and 2014, and that mobile purchases between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday doubled compared to last year.

Online specials for Green Monday include a one-half carat diamond bridal ring set that carried a list price of $1,198 and sold for $598 on Black Friday. The set is priced at $398 for Green Monday.

Unfortunately for Wal-Mart, none of the iPad or video game offers is unique. A quick search of Best Buy finds identical pricing for the iPad, the single Star Wars Battlefront video game and the PS4 bundle.

In toys, an Air Hogs Star Wars Remote Control X-Wing Starfighter is priced at $29 on Green Monday from Wal-Mart. The same toy at Amazon was selling Saturday for just under $60, and the list price is $69.99. The Wal-Mart price is the lowest we saw for this toy after a quick online search.
