Thinkstock

As of Tuesday morning, a total of 972 online retailers have signed up to participate in Free Shipping Day, which falls on Friday, December 16, this year. On that day, participating retailers will offer free shipping on any order, without any minimum order size.

The full list of participating retailers will be posted at the Free Shipping Day website at midnight Thursday night/Friday morning.

Last year’s Free Shipping Day (December 18) generated sales of $1.48 billion, a 21.5% year-over-year increase, according to Adobe Digital Insights. More than 1,000 merchants took part in last year’s event.

Along with second-year participant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), new retailers this year include Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU), GameStop Inc. (NYSE: GME), American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE: AEO) and Gap Inc.’s (NYSE: GPS) Banana Republic stores.

Free Shipping Day founder Luke Knowles said:

We always see last-minute sign-ups during the week leading up to Free Shipping Day. It’s not uncommon for us to be adding stores just hours before the site goes live. As a small business owner, I enjoy the opportunity to offer high-level media exposure for small businesses as well as the big companies.

There is no sign-up fee for merchants, but they must agree to offer free shipping with no minimum purchase on Friday, December 16.
