The Most Expensive Super Bowl Tickets

Super Bowl LI is just a few days away, and fans of both the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, as well as NFL fans in general, are scrambling to find affordable seats at NRG Stadium in Houston for Sunday’s game.

As of the writing of this article, getting a seat in Houston costs a minimum of $2,043. The average price of a ticket for the February 5 event is a substantial $4,424. Some individual seats are being sold for several times that price. One ticket — a club seat in section 313, row G — is available for the jaw-dropping amount of $22,812.

Secondary market ticket resource TicketIQ provided 24/7 Wall St. with average ticket prices for the previous seven Super Bowls as well as the current prices for the upcoming game.

Four days from the event, this year’s average Super Bowl ticket is 12.7% cheaper than it was for Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California in 2016. It is about 25% cheaper — a matter of $1,379.50 — than Super Bowl XLIX the previous year in Glendale, Arizona. That event, between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, had the most expensive average ticket price in at least the last seven years at $5,622 as of four days before the event. Average prices shot up to over $9,700 the day before the game, and the same may happen this year.

Even if prices do not increase any further, they will still be more expensive than game day ticket prices of any of the Super Bowls between 2010 and 2014. The current average price of Super Bowl LI is more than double the game day average price of $2,199.08 of Super Bowl XLVII in 2013 between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers.

Ticket prices for the biggest game in North American professional sports can fluctuate wildly. Fans sitting in the 600 level — nearly the furthest away from the field — can spend between $2,000 and $3,000 on a ticket. Seats closest to the middle of the field in the 100 level cost between $5,000 and $8,000. The most expensive ticket can be found in the stadium’s club seating, in the 300 level, at a current price of over $22,000.

This is how much the average ticket cost in each of the last six Super Bowls cost in the secondary market, as well as the current prices for the upcoming game as of the time of writing. Also included is the minimum ticket prices an individual would need to pay to attend each game. All price data was supplied by secondary market ticket resource TicketIQ.
