38 Artists With the Most Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency, and overall excellence in the recording industry. The awards recognize the talent of musicians in many genres, including pop, rock, R&B, jazz, classical, musical theater, and more. There are also Grammy categories for the producers, engineers, sound mixers, and technicians behind the music.

A Grammy Award is a milestone for many artists, symbolizing critical success. Winning a Grammy can also often take a career in music to the next level. While many musical artists dream of winning a Grammy, some musical legends dream of winning their 10th, 20th, or even 30th Grammy Award.

To determine the artists with the most Grammy Awards, 24/7 Wall St. tallied all Grammy wins for all musical artists, producers, engineers, sound mixers, and technicians since 1959. There are 38 artists who have won at least 15 Grammy Awards throughout their careers.

Many of the artists with the most Grammy Awards have been recognized for their talent across multiple genres. Quincy Jones, for example, has worked and been awarded in more than 10 genres of music, including jazz, pop, rap, R&B, musicals, and children’s music.

Some artists who have won more than a dozen Grammys, however, managed to do so while largely working within one musical genre. Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Eminem have dominated the rap Grammys, each winning at least 15 awards in the genre.

While the The Recording Academy claims to honor achievements without regard to album sales or chart position, the Grammy Awards tend to reflect commercial success. Bruce Springsteen, U2, Eminem, and Eric Clapton have each sold at least 40 million albums in the U.S., making them some of the best selling artists of all time. These artists also won among the most Grammy Awards.

Some artists, however, have been recognized and awarded by The Recording Academy without having sold millions of albums. Composers working in the classical genre — Georg Solti, Vladimir Horowitz, and James Mallinson, as well as more contemporary conductors such as Pierre Boulez and Itzhak Perlman — have each sold fewer than 500,000 albums in the U.S. yet are among the artists with the most Grammy Awards of all time.

The list of artists with the most Grammy Awards largely consists of popular producers, pop singers, rap artists, jazz musicians, and composers. There are, however, a few genre standouts. Jimmy Sturr, for example, is a polka musician who has won 18 of the 25 Grammys ever awarded in the genre. Vince Gill also stands out as the only country musician with at least 15 Grammy Awards, having won 20 of his 21 Grammys for country music.

To determine the artists with the most Grammy Awards, 24/7 Wall St. tallied all Grammy wins for all musical artists, producers, engineers, sound mixers, and technicians since 1959. Data on Grammy Award wins and nominations came from The Recording Academy.
