100 Most Popular Musicians on Tour This Summer

Christopher Polk / Getty Images for MTV

Summer is a time for the outdoors, for leisurely nights, and for having lots of fun. It’s also the perfect season for concerts. Luckily for concertgoers in the United States, there’s no shortage of musical acts willing to hit the road and perform live music for their fans.

In 2017, $8 billion worth of tickets to major concerts were sold in the United States, according to concert industry publication Pollstar. Live music is big business, and with many fans willing to pay hundreds of dollars to see their favorite performers, it’s no wonder many musicians choose to spend their summers on the road.

By creating an index based on metrics such as followers on concert tracking website Songkick and annual page views of each artist’s Wikipedia page, 24/7 Wall St. has determined the 100 most popular musicians going on tour this summer.

Detailed Findings & Methodology:

While many of the top artists will be playing shows outside of the United States this summer, the majority of them will take place domestically. The nation’s geography lends itself to road touring, as bands can reach many different cities with new crowds each day.

The musical act with the most planned tour dates is Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, who has an impressive 83 shows scheduled – some of which will take place before summer officially begins on June 21. Rap trio Migos follows closely behind, with 65 dates, and country artist Keith Urban is third, with 64 concerts.

Some of the musicians who have highest number of Wikipedia page views -– a loose signifier of the level of celebrity –- are slated for a high number of performances as well. Ed Sheeran will play 55 shows, Bruno Mars 40, and Taylor Swift 30. These artists have the third, fourth, and fifth most Wikipedia page views of all the artists on our list, respectively.

Other performers will be keeping a lower profile this summer. Ariana Grande, who has more Wikipedia page views than all others on our list, has only one show planned this summer, on June 2 at the Banc of California Stadium. Her tour last year was interrupted by the terrorist attack in Manchester, United Kingdom. John Mayer also has only one show planned, as do rappers Flo Rida, T.I., Tyga, and Meek Mill.

To identify this summer’s best concerts, 24/7 Wall St. created an index based on the weighted average of the number of fans tracking an artist’s tour dates on live music-tracking site Songkick as well as the average daily number of visits to the artist’s Wikipedia page over the past 12 months (as of May 1, 2018). To be considered for the ranking, an artist or band needed to be currently on tour in the United States and have an average of 500,000 fans tracking them on Songkick.
