Leading Gun Manufacturers By State

The global leader in the civilian firearm market is the United States. According to a  recent Gallup poll, 45% of American households own at least one gun. Numerous households have multiple firearms, distinguishing the U.S. as the only nation that has more privately-owned guns than people.

Consumer demand for firearms in the U.S. fuels a $32.1 billion per year industry and companies nationwide are capitalizing on this demand. In 2021, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives reported that over 13.3 million firearms were manufactured in the U.S. for the domestic market.

Analyzing 2021 ATF data on the total number of guns made in each of the more than 3,200 federally licensed firearm production plants in the United States, 24/7 Wall St. has identified the leading gunmaker in every state.

Although every company on this list holds the top position in firearm production at the state level, some are fairly small-scale operations. In Delaware and Hawaii, no single manufacturer made more than 10 firearms in 2021. Conversely, in states where guns and ammunition have a much larger economic impact, leading gunmakers produce millions of firearms each year.

The companies highlighted on this list include several well-known global gun manufacturers. In 2021, the Smith & Wesson plant in Columbia, Missouri, produced more than 2.3 million firearms, accounting for more than 90% of firearm production in the state that year. Likewise, the Newington, New Hampshire, Sig Sauer facility produced almost 1.3 million firearms in 2021, representing approximately 65% of the state’s overall gun production.

Sturm, Ruger & Company, with manufacturing operations in North Carolina, and Heny RAC, operating in Wisconsin and New Jersey, are the only two companies on this list to rank as the top gun manufacturers in more than one state.

Methodology

To identify the largest gunmaker in each state, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed firearm manufacturing data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. For each state, we identified the company that owns the production facility that made the most firearms in 2021.

Supplemental data on the number of gunmakers operating in the state and firearm production by type is also from the ATF and for 2021.

We also reviewed state level data on the economic output of the firearm and ammunition industry and the number of jobs directly supported by the industry from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearm industry trade association. All NSSF data is for 2022.
