The Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted off and on from 1821 to 1823, the last time it was active. So, it should come as no surprise that the eruption in early April which effectively cut air travel in Europe and across the Atlantic should be repeated itself again, and against.
The International Air Transport Association put the cost to the industry of the April incident at $1.7 billion. That figure is likely to go higher. New ash plums from Eyjafjallajokull will close airports in Scotland and parts of the UK today. That process now appears likely to happen off-and-on across Europe, possibly for some time.
