While London gained, Frankfurt's DAX slipped 0.12% and Paris's CAC 40 finished essentially flat. That divergence means investors with broad European exposure drew virtually all of their day's return from UK large caps alone.

The FTSE's ability to recover from an early deficit and hold its gains through the final hour is worth watching as the next session opens, particularly if continental markets remain soft.
